I'm planning to replace my whelping box. It has done good service for 12 years but feel it's time for a change. There was a thread a while ago recommending a type of whelping box that looked like it would suit me. I want one with sides of 3ft 6' or thereabouts. Please help !

I use puppy pen panels (one with a door at the front) on a washable base (I ahve a 3 foot square one soem old puppy panels fitted in, but for a larger pen have used a large offcut of cushion floor vinyl)), and line the sides with cardboard to about 18 inches.

I use a panel across the top to keep it rigid and also to be able to use a throw over the whole to make a cosy cave.

I don't use pig rails as have seen pups hung up on them, and the only pup I ever lost to crushing was in the middle of the box after an exhausting labour for Mum and me where we both fell asleep.

Thank you ! And I've seen puppies get trapped between pig rails so am unsure of their safety once puppies become mobile -which seems to be at a younger age ! Steelcity do pens which look as though they would suit me .The whelping box I bought 12 years ago cost over £300 so prices seem reasonable. The problem with my current pen is that puppies are able to scale the sides from such a young age. I want something that will keep them secured a bit longer. I have been transferring puppies in to Croft pen at age of 4 weeks or thereabouts but have had problems with puppies getting muzzles/jaws caught in the mesh.

I bought my whelping box and run from Steel City and am very pleased with it. I had the sides made higher so the pups couldn't climb out, although one did manage it over the corner!

It's very good quality and I had an excellent service from them.

I've got one from Steel City too, had it made to fit inside of my Freedom pen, only thing I did find was the nut and bolts aren't stainless and they rusted, but we got replacements, so not a major problem.

Have just ordered Steel City pen. Really impressed by customer service and price.
