Has anyone used a ventlock. I was thinking of getting one for our people carrier but have heard that someone who used one it damaged a moving part of their lock.

I use one and have never had a problem. If you are going to buy one I would recommend getting the longest you can that doesn't allow people to put their hands inside the car.

I use a ventlock a fair bit at agility shows and it's brilliant for those hot but rainy/showery days when you wouldn't leave the car unventilated but don't want the rain to come in either. You can still lock your car but have ventilation and peace of mind too.

I've used one for donkeys, it must be about 10 years old, used on various cars and the only trouble I've had is it jammed a bit, quick squirt of WD 40 and it was fine again.
I wouldn't be without one.

Can you get a donkey in your car then? :)

I did a double take at the donkeys lol

With the rest, used one for years, never had a problem.

I've had one for about 12 years, I've used the same one with a succession of cars and never had a problem. Mine is the longest they make, think it's 24" as I also padlock the tailgate guard but use the ventlock so someone can't accidentally shut the back door, or the wind blow it shut.

I have used for lots of years, never had a problem with any of the cars it has been used onl i only used when dogs are in crate for obvious reasons.

We have 2 - one is a really long one and the other is a really short one.

When we had a car which had a hatch-back, it was really useful to be able to clip it open in the summer and get some air through.  Because the dogs were crated in a custom fitting cage, no one could open that cage even with the longest Ventlock on - it would hit against the door of the boot and not open.

However since then we've got a 4x4 with a rear window which winds down, so now we tend to leave the window down and the dogs caged up and the car locked and don't use the Ventlocks.  Does your boot window roll down or open at all?  If not, then I think they are invaluable.  If it does, not sure you need one.

Trouble with leaving the window open items can be dropped into the dog cage or items fed if you get it right you can avoid this with a Ventlock.

Even with the shortest ventlock someone could poke a bit of poisoned food into the car, it just isn't possible to guard against every eventuality. I'm certain that far more dogs overheat than have terrible things fed to them or dropped into their cage :-)

Yes, I agree, but an open window is an open opportunity where with a well placed cage and a suitable size Ventlock it can be made very difficult - I do agree though nothing is impossible if you are determined to get at a particular dog but if you are just out for mischief then you take the easy option.

Not with my ventlock. My crate sits back about 12 inches and no hand can get under the boot. i have tried.

Unfortunately our car crates are custom built and use all available space, so whatever we leave open - window, ventlock or anything else - it would be possible to feed the dogs something nasty.

As Chaumsong says, it's highly unlikely and the alternative is that our dogs can never be left in the car in summer.  That's not realistic for us and would mean they couldn't attend many events they enjoy.

Thanks for all your comments. One of our dogs so mad if anyone goes near the car so I think that would put anyone off putting there hands in.

Lol, I wish
- By tadog [gb] Date 03.01.13 19:42 UTC
Rabid, my crate is a Trystorme custom made crate for my vehicle. but i purposely had it made with extra spare space at rear, for this very reason. comes in handy

I like the Ventlock but advise you to order it from a supplier, not direct from Ventlock. My friend ordered direct last year and could never get a reply from phone calls or emails and she thought he had gone out of business. It took many weeks to get her order. His business management skills are rubbish so source it from somewhere else.
