A customer of mine has had her pup speyed.shes been done 6 weeks now and the scar is open in three places (small but still open)weeping and very red...ive advised to take her back and shes asking if another set of antibiotocs are going to do the trick as shes already been given one set and it didnt do the job...
Is it possible shes allegic to the sutures theyve used or anyone hadanything like this??shes going to the vets in the morning but i feel for her cos shes a lovely pup and a lovely woman...i just hope her vets isnt the type to rinse her you know

Right just spoke to her,whats happened is she went back after her 10 days to have her check up.the vet noticed a red sore bit and tried pulling the last stitch through and then gave antibiotcs to heal the hole he'd just made telling her to keep eye out!!!

that was three weeks ago and its getting worse...now its in several places and red and she has holes in her belly and its all red and sore...personally id be going somewhere eles!!

Definitely needs to go back ASAP, but I don't think the vet's can really be blamed at this point, it sound's like there was a slight infection when they took the last stitches out (and I taking them out is often enough to stop the irritation) and she was given antibiotics and told to come back if there was a problem. The problem I think it that it sounds like that was 3-4 weeks ago and she hasn't been back. the dog should have been back at the vets as soon as the 1st course was finished if it wasn't healed not left to get worse.
I hope she takes her back and gets it sorted, I've had dogs with slow healing scars, (too much exercise too soon also slows the healing btw) and I would think a course of antibiotics and cleaning should sort it fairly easily.

But doesn't know much about dogs, obviously.  Her duty under the animal welfare act was to take the pup back weeks ago.  I would be telling her, her fortune, lovely or not.

It sounds like the vet used soluble stitches that haven't dissolved yet and the bitch is having a reaction to them, or at least that's what happened with my girl and it sounds the same. You can't blame the vet is the owner didn't take her back? I would be back for more antibiotics and be using something like aloe vera on the wound.

She should definitely have been taken back to the vets before now.  Hope the dog is OK and doesn't get a serious infection.

Trouble is shes oneof these who DOESNT listen no matter what!! i did tell her when she brought her to me to look at that she needed to go back and she said she was going to.
quite correct jean...knows nothing about dogs,and although she said shes rested the pup which i can belive (she loves the bones of all her dogs) i think she should have KEPT her on rest but there we go....
The way she explained it to me about the vet id have wanted a second opinion but thats me,i txt her today asking about vets and ive had a reply saing the app was at 6 and then txt again at8 and got no reply so dont know....

It may be a case of simply needing a longer course of the same antibiotics or perhaps a different antibiotic (as the bacteria may not be susceptible to the first antibiotic given). Advice amounts to the same as the others though, she must take the bitch back to the vet.
Her vet can't help unless he/she is aware of the problem and the woman has a duty of care to her bitch.

I too think she has to go back to the vets , I had a dog have similar , her wound just wouldn't heal and  and was gaping , I took her back to the vets twice and raised this concern about being allergic to the stitches , I was almost laughed at ( but I know I was right !!!!! ) and told to keep on with AB's
When I got home I took the last supposedly dissolving stitch out myself ( I know you probably shouldn't , but I've done this before so knew what to do ) and bathed every 2 - 3 hours with epsom salts , the oozing puss and redness was cleared in a couple of days and the scar healed lovely in no time .
I swear by epsom salts , however I always dab the wound with clear cooled boiled water after bathing so it doesn't sting the dog too much. Could you maybe persuade your customer to bathe the would frequently.
