Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / One mating or Two?
- By Chatsworth [gb] Date 22.12.12 06:56 UTC
I just wondered what the majority do in the various breeds, one mating or two?

Always had two for my bitches but notice an increasing trend in my breed to do just the one.

If everything is right, it only takes one mating...we have done both, just depends if your happy that the first mating is enough/right.
This time we had 2 but that was pruely as we had the stud dog staying with us & thought it would be silly not to.

Always go for 3.

I aim for 2, the last time I did 3 with my own dog and bitch because I had failed 4 times to get her pregnant before with 2 matings both with outside studs and my own lad, it worked.

Using outside studs has meant staying away from home as they have been 200+ miles away so have done 2 matings 48hrs apart and then headed for home.

My matings are invariably a long distance away and I only do one. Id rather that than leave the bitch or stay over with her.

Think it depends on things like distance; for me it's just been one last time, she took to it and had pups, recently we repeated the mating, same mating (30 minute tie), same stud, same day, and she's taken again. So I think it depends.

For my large breed I do two although on one occasion I did just the one ans we had been  all the way across the country and failed with the first choice, then had to go halfway across the country for the second choice, and there was no time to go again. For my toybreed the dog always come to stay with me so we get several matings.

I like to make sure that the bitches are mated at least twice, sometimes we'll do more depending on how well the other matings have gone.

I do know of someone who does it twice a day for 5 days....I think that is a tad excessive!

I usually like to do it twice but the last couple of years i seem to be suffering with really bad travel sickness, yep with me driving!  So the last girl I only mated once, it was a good mating and she had been progesterone tested and she had five lovely pups.

I agree 2x per day for 5 days is far too much, the sperm survive for several days, the new sperm in the dog need to be replenished and the eggs survive for several days too.

I wonder how much persuasion the bitch needs for such a regime, my girls will snap at any male that comes near her within 24hrs of being mated and 72hrs after the first mating won't entertain any male attention at all, they will be flirting with my lads when we get back from an outside mating which they love, by next morning they are getting their heads snapped off for looking sideways at the girls.

Would always go for at least two, but unless progesterone tests had been done prefer to mate the bitch for as long as she will stand, either daily for three days or alternate days after that to reach the point where she or the dog loose interest, to be sure I hadn't mated too early.

To achieve that it is best to have the dog and bitch on the same premises, or close by.

Once is enough . I only do more if I'm using my own boy and I know they are enjoying themselves.

2 or maybe 3!  i done one mating last season as was certain it would be fine and she missed, its not going to hurt to be sure..ill always now do 3,if possible but definatly 2

Only ever mated both my girls once on day 13 and they both conceived on each occasion, Miranda had two litters and both litters and 14 puppies in each, her dam Asti was mated once and had 14 too.

It is all to do with timing and getting it right, I have had 2 bitches same breed, one was mated on days 12&14 as recommended by her breeder and my mentor and judged to be right on inspection by stud owner and she whelped 63 days after the second mating, tried the same with second bitch and failed 4 times with 3 different studs, later using ovulation pads I found her to be ready about day 8 and at her next season got her pregnant.

When travelling long distances and staying in B&B I would prefer more than one mating to be sure of a result, I am sure those travelling abroad to a stud must be of the same opinion.

I recently reported about the bitch who had a single puppy by ceasarean at 70 days. She previously had 10 pups from 2 matings.
On the single puppy she had just one mating at the same number of days but when they went back for the 2nd mating the dog would not perform  and I gather later was said to have  a problem which may have caused that ( the bitch was very keen ).
Always 2 matings for me and I have found 15 days for the first mating has worked well for my line.
