I am posting on behalf of a very frightened friend.

the history is a bitch that had to have emergency C section after starting to re absorb pups at 7 weeks into pregnancy, op went fine and she seemed to recover
however since this she has been very aloof, growling at the other dogs in her household, never at humans but is not the happy want to be loved girl anymore she was before.
she has gone form the happy go lucky everybody's friend, to sitting in her bed not wanting to be fussed and even when taken out for a walk cries to go back home.
unfortunately they had to have a bitch put down in feb due to an aggressive attack on another dog in the house and this was caused by something that had happened in her mental state after rearing a litter of pups, the vet checked her out and advised PTS, totally unprovoked and totally out of character.
she does not want this to happen again and is frightened of going to the vet again in case he advises the same.

I am more thinking that this could be a hormonal imbalance than anything more sinister, but i can sympathise with her worry.
anybody else had this happen at all and was there a happy outcome. I have said take her to the vets.

I don't get this -did the vet find something physically wrong with the dog? Why put it to sleep otherwise? It is a fact that pregnancy and rearing a litter very often changes the dynamics within a pack as the bitch with a litter will have her status raised (if nothing else in HER own eyes) and this is something we all have to be prepared for. I would not put a dog to sleep because they had had a falling out, I would either keep them separate or rehome one. Unfortunately when bitches fall out it's unlikely they will be able to be kept together again.

In the case of the other bitch, even more complicated as she did not end up with any pups.

I'd be concerned that there might be something physically wrong, perhaps a result of the C section, and perhaps the distress is down to pain.

No one can make your friend put her dog to sleep - the vet can suggest this, but it's always your friend's decision at the end of the day, so really think it's unethical to delay taking the dog to the vet.

I have never known of anyone having a c/section because pups are being absorbed, I think your friend needs to find a new vet.

Hormonally her pregnancy was stopped part way through with major surgery, so the normal hormone progression didn't happen, she then didn't have pups to raise so releasing the nice nurturing hormones and is probably totally confused as to what has happened to her and reacting by trying to protect herself.

It is early days and provided she is eating and drinking properly then just give her time, don't force her to do anything that causes distress like leaving the house for a walk. I presume her wound has healed up with no residual pain and there is no signs of infection, urinary or vaginal, check her temp to be sure.

If your friend is worried about this vet surgery then find a new one she can trust as you never know when you will need help in an emergency.

Keep us posted.

The reason for the section was she was losing a lot of black tar like substance and was becoming quite ill, so the vet decided she needed the op.

I also thought it could be hormonal, and have advised her to take her to the vet or even get a second opinion, will try talking to her again and see if we get anywhere......almost puts me off trying to breed when you hear so many horror stories!
