I have had many cats over the years and thought I had dealt with everything...my old boy is  short coated... he is 14 approx.. is driving me bonkers with his coat... it seems to have gone clumpy around his rear around the back legs and the back of his belly, he is healthy for his age , good weight ,cleaning himself, eating /drinking still going out for his entertainment he is a hunter >G< but his coat is so thick I am having trouble grooming him.
I am presuming because of his age it is becoming uncomfortable to be groomed as we have done over the years, sometimes I think he is a little stiff .... could be artritis :( will have a chat with vet regarding that... but wondered if anyone knows of any grooming tool that would help to ease his discomfort but make it easy for me to get the clumps out.
Also he had quite a few teeth out this year which actually was a worry at the time for me... I have wondered if the anaesthetic could have changed the texture of the coat , even so it has given him a new lease of life ... vet was very happy with him afterwards... he said he is a fab cat very friendly . I say that as I sit here with my scratched hands and savlon!!

Has he been tested for thyroid? That can change coat and temperament! If he was borderline at last blood do ask for another test, one of mine passed thyroid with flying colours but six months later was well into age-related thyroid issues. It can change quite quickly in some cases.

I had a shorthair x who was very prone to clumping, I got a furminator and that seemed to work a treat at preventing them but I had to have a good going through first with a slicker then a comb to get rid of the clumps first.

I will mention it to my vet although I wouldnt say he had changed in temperament per say.. just regarding grooming... thanks for the reply..

I'm guessing it will be more age, he won't be so bothered about grooming himself so much although saying that my male BSH before he was neutered used to get clumps in his coat and he is only 7 years old, neutered last year.     

Its difficult with cats isnt it ? as they hide a lot... he does sleep more this time of year ... curled up on his blanky :) but he is still grooming himself... will have to watch him to see if he can get to his back legs when grooming ..... this boy came to me as  a stray we had him neutered when he was a kitten.
