Silly question but here goes. Is it alright to cook liver, cut it up for training treats, freeze it, defrost it and then give it to the dogs. Does that make sense???
I just don't want to give my dogs food poisoning as it seems to be a speciality of mine where my family are concerned ( not very good in the kitchen you see).
Thanks, Naomi.

Absolutely fine Naomi, lots of people do it. Adding some garlic helps as well, but your pockets do tend to smell!

Try this one -- cut the liver into the size bits that you want and spread them out on a baking tray -- sprinkle with garlic powder and then bake in a slow oven until done. I like it to be somewhat dry in texture, giving the dogs something to nibble on. Once it's cool, portion it into treat-size bags. It's ideal for dog shows -- simply take it from the freezer on the morning as you leave and it will be fresh and thawed in time for showing.
Hi Naomi, similar to Sierras recipe. I simmer liver in water about 20 mins, then cut into small 'bits' and bake slowly in an oven (usually takes about one and a half hours) very cool oven, or put them in just after you have used the oven and it is still warm. When the bits are dried and cooled, they will keep in an airtight container for 2-3 weeks as long as they are dried right through. I do a batch every 3 weeks or so and use them as training aids and treats. They go down very well, and even the cat loves them (can't get her to retrieve or sit and stay though!!)

Then either use the water to put on the dogs food or put porridge oats in it with some french onion soup and dry in trays in a cool oven - takes a long time but the dogs love it.

PS When I make flapjacks they dry to a crisp in no time at all - make them for the dogs and they take ages

Thanks, I started making them this morning. My house now 'stinks' of liver. The dogs are running around like nutters!

Battersea recommended the 'liver treat' to us too. It really works & is worth a stinky house. Our dog hates cats and a liver treat reminds her on her walks we are more interesting that the tabby that just shot up a tree!! The only trouble is my husband won't carry the liver around - he is afraid of becoming the pied piper for any strays in the area - so I have stinky pockets as well as a stinky house!! But I say stick to the liver treats for a very obedient dog!!

LOL.... thanks Lorna!! I forgot the important part of simmering the liver first!!! I've been making it for so many years, I think that I can do it in my sleep now. My husband is a vegetarian and the simmering liver smell is so pervasive. We purchased a new grill with the side burner so I think I'll drive the neighborhood barmy by simmering the liver outside before baking!!

My lot love liver treats too. Also I remove any pieces of chicken from the carcase before making stock, and pop it into suitable size bags in the freezer, seems like treats for free and makes a change. Mine seem to enjoy it as much as liver. JH
