Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Vetbed over vinyl heat pad???
- By LeanneStrudwick [gb] Date 10.12.12 09:41 UTC Edited 10.12.12 10:30 UTC
Hi everyone, I've only ever used heat lamps but after a recommendation from a friend I decided to try a heat pad instead. the heat pad doesn't look too comfy even with the fleece cover so I'm wondering if it would still work with vetbed on top?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated : )

Not sure what size dogs you have but I put a vinyl heat pad under vetbed for my toy litter and have had no problems. I rarely use a heat pad for my large breed as they don't seem to need one, also my big girls don't like to be too hot.

I guess it's cold this time of the year and your pups won't be digging for a while whatever size they are, so see how it goes.

Thank you for your reply, I've got a toy breed too, I will use the vetbed on top, thanks again.

I didn't find enough heat came through if covered in vet bed, so just single thickness fleece over the pad and vet bed for them to migrate to if they got too hot, the vinyl  pad is quite flexible, I have used it on my back in the past and other than the heat I wouldn't know it was there.

Oh really, well the vetbed is pretty thick isn't it so maybe I'll just put it around the heat pad in that case and leave the heat pad with just the fleece cover. Thank you.

Me? I'd ring the manufacturer and ask for their advice. On my heatpad (PetNap) it clearly states not to cover it with VetBed. I wouldn't want to put pups at risk nor would I want the heat pad to pack in when I needed it. If the instructions say use just a fleece cover (or even a pillow slip or similar weight) then that's what I'd use. But hey, I'm just a physicist, what would I know about electrical things?!! :-o :-o

Strangely enough the instructions said nothing about covering it? But I tried it out and the heat doesn't come through enough so I've decided to have the vetbed next to the heat pad, thank you for your advice, much appreciated ;)

I checked my instructions and they say they dont recommend covering with vetbed

Vetbed next to heatpad, good idea.  Will be interesting to see which one they go for.  I've used both in the past and prefer vetbed, brilliant stuff, still use it for my oldies.

My heat pad works better with a thick covering. It is advised to cover with vet bed as the weight of the vet bed and pups draws the heat up. If you lay your hand on it very lightly you cannot feel heat but if you rest it harder you can feel it warmng up. Go by your manufactures advice.
Mind you every puppy I have ever had has shunned the heat pad !!! The only time they have used it is in the first 24 hrs.

What make of heat pad have you got?
- By Merlot [gb] Date 11.12.12 19:56 UTC
Couldn't tell you now I am afraid I have had it about 7 years and it came form Mole valley farmers. Nothing on the mat itself and the box is loooong gone! It is a great mat though and has served me well.

Oops, sorry. That question was intended for Leanne ... I'm worrying about the thickness of material over her heat pad :-o

My instructions say to cover with a blanket. As I don't use blankets I use vetbed over it. I've never had any problems. My heatpad comes from Petsavers (I think - I'm not about to wake them up to check :-) )

It's the one from hyperdrug.co.uk. I've got a toy breed what temperature setting would you have it on? The highest is 55. Thanks.x

Oh, yours is a bit more sophisticated than mine. My one's either on or off! Could you experiment with the settings and see what you think. And maybe someone will be along soon with the same model as yours. x

Thanks esme, I'll do that ;) xx
