How often should my lab be groomed? I brush him twice a week, but we occasionally like to take him to the groomers for a bath when he starts to get that overwhelming "doggy" smell. But I noticed the last time we took him, his fur seemed to be a little dryer and he had dandruff. We usually take him once every four months or so. Is this too much? Unfortunately, we don't have a yard to hose him off in when he gets too muddy, so I usually just wipe him down with some wet towels. Doesn't help the smell though -- lol!!

You could try using a dry grooming spray which has a pleasant smell. I like the tea tree oil one :) Ideally grooming should be part of a daily routine but a lot of people only groom once or twice a week. I only bath about once or twice a year :)

You could also use a chamois leather to finish him off. It's great for absorbing dirt and excess oils which can lead to odour and giving a lovely gleam to the coat.

Hi Iloveyorkies,

I'm guessing any shop that sells car accessories?

Yes you can get them in any car accessory shops like Halfords, places like Homebase and some larger supermarkets will stock them as well. Get the real Chamois leather though and not the synthetic ones :)

Hiya,
If his coat was like that after he had come back from the groomers, the chances were the shampoo hadnt been rinsed out properly!Once every four months isnt too much, it probably keeps his coat very healthy and clean. I would probably just take him when he does get dirty like you said. Just mention it to them next time, and they will probably be extra careful rinsing or use a special shampoo on him.
Another thing you could do is to put evening primrose capusal in his food this will help his coat (I think!!)
Hope that helps!

Hi Vickydogs - that's right re evening primrose oil capsules - my vet recommended I pop one in Mungo's dinner daily to stop his itchiness :)
