Do you need a reflective coat/waistcoat thingy not sure if I read somewhere you need that in your car
- By shivj [gb] Date 10.12.12 12:33 UTC
Yes you do in France and it needs to be in the front of the car! Also, I think you need two alcohol checker things but a pack usually contains two anyway.
- By Rhodach [gb] Date 10.12.12 12:50 UTC
What is an alcohol checker? Never travelled abroad but never heard of anyone having to carry one who does. Wouldn't not drinking be simpler?
- By Merlot [gb] Date 10.12.12 12:51 UTC
Thanks for that we have a reflective jacket will make sure its packed..

A new French law makes it compulsory to carry at least one (two is better in case you're made to use one) breathalyser kit in the car, as well as reflective jackets for all people in the car, and a warning triangle.

Two jackets then !!
Thanks for the heads up ! We will only be in France for 1/2 hr on the way and 1/2 hr on the way back but sods law would have us picked up if we went unprepared...

You are supposed to have a sat nav that does not have speed check warnings as well....ours does but we will just have to risk it. and a fire extinguisher....we do not have one so maybe we can get one on route!

Take two, it's easy to mess one, up filling it in, especially with transcribing foreign addresses etc.

You can turn the warnings off to comply.

Have you double checked microchips are readable with scanner?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 11.12.12 10:16 UTC
Vet to fill in fit to travel bit (not sure if still needed, depnds on travel operators requirements) in pet passport???
- By Merlot [gb] Date 11.12.12 10:32 UTC
We are going by car in the tunnel so i do not think that bit is needed Barbara. Nothing about it on the DEFRA site. I assume it is for the use of a carrier.

Headlight adapters.  You can get fire extinguishers in Halfords along with the headlight adapters - they are just little stickers you put on the headlights to stop you blinding traffic at night when you are on the wrong side of the road.

I would also take a tick remover - Netherlands was the worst place for my two to pick up ticks from their walks.

I would also ring your car insurer if you haven't already to let them know you are travelling in Europe, some need prior notice of travel for your insurance to be valid.  It's something you may need to check in your policy.  Also ring the bank to let them know you may have foreign transactions on your card just in case they stop it.

Sorry Aileen, I didn't think last weekend but I have a scanner that you could borrow. I wouldn't dream of taking dogs out of the country without one in case the scanner at point of entry failed.  Can you get over to borrow it? Sandra

Thanks for the offer Sandra...I will do my best to collect it. Will ring you
