My girls pups are 6 days old now and doing well. I have now cut their nails as they are growing rapidly, but have noticed that she looks a little sore. Is there anything safe I can put on her undercarriage? Thanks in advance

Vaseline. If you have a country/livestock feed place near you Bag balm as used for cows and sheep is excellent.

When you say sore do you mean inflamed and swollen or just some irritation of the skin?

Thanks, Brainless. I'm not in the country but vaseline I have.
No, not inflamed, just where the puppies have scratched her - there's only a couple of markes, but it looks a little pink.

Would Bag balm be an udder cream?
I've used udder cream for various things including chaffed hands and have always found it really good. It used to be really cheap too.

Do you know if it can be bought in small quantities? It looks like a good idea, but with a toy bitch one of those buckets would last an awfully long time :-)

I used Calendula ointment when breastfeeding my babes - it's not harmful when ingested and I believe safe for use with dogs too (according to various companies on the internet). You could buy a small tube from Boots or other high street chemist.
Try an equestrian supplier....they tend to have small plastic jars.

aloe vera lotion is lovely for them - put on after pups have fed in large quantities, it's soothing, anti-septic and anti-biotic, mine really love it when they're feeling sore... give it time to soak in before the next feed

Yes, too much talking with US contacts where it is known as Bag balm.
Under advice from our vet we use human nipple cream, seems to do the job ok.

Thanks everyone, I was thinking of Kamillosan which I used when breastfeeding. It contains chamomile and everything I've read says that chamomile is ok for dogs. She's a lot better since their nails have been cut, but it would be good to have something in anyway. Not sure I can get to a farm shop in the near future, but will bear that in mind if I do as it seems a popular choice.
I was recommended Kamillosan by folk on here a couple of years ago, and do use it with my girls if they get sore. No adverse effects.
