My litter of puppies (small breed) are now five weeks old ,and so far they've been doing fine. They're fed on Naturediet and Autarky -with some added chicken, scrambled eggs and tuna fish now and then. Yesterday after breakfast (soaked Autarky and scrambled eggs) one of them threw up - and later in the day three of them were retching. They all seemed fine afterwards, and ate other meals with good appetites. I thought that would be it and they were all fine this morning - eating well. Then half an our later one of them brought all the food up again.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing this ? Is it possible to over feed puppies at this stage ? Is it perhaps quite normal to have a few upset stomachs in certain stages of the puppies development ? For how long do I just wait and see if it will pass ?

Them being so young me personally I would go straight to the vet, and also write down what they have eaten over the last couple of days. I wouldn't wait any amount of time, maybe even bring in the mom to make sure she is fine too, not carrying a bug or anything. How is their poo? I only fed mine their puppy food and nothing more, maybe their tummy is a little sensitive.
Sure hope they are all ok.

Hi
I agree with Dollface get them and mum to the vets asap..5 weeks is too young to be losing any weight..so if they have a tummy upset best to nip in the bud..if they continue to eat and then throw up it could put them off eating...:) let us know how they get on.

maybe the eggs were slightly dodgy,or they are intolerant to the milk used in the scrambled eggs and its effecting their little tummys. My vet told me that different breeds change at different ages , but at around the 6/7 week mark ( give or take a few weeks ) the stomach is unable to allow milk to pass through and so it just sits in the stomach and curdles, whether it's goats milk or not dosent matter ( my pup has no problem with cows milk, but goats milk will make her throw up that meal , eat as if fine, then thro up again)
All just a thought , i would follow advice of others and head for the vet.Let us know what they say

I think I am quite certain that the eggs were fine -as they are from our own organic chickens. And no milk has been given for the last two days - only had a little water in the eggs.
- I have been watching my puppies very cosely to day. They were fed again at two o'clock - only Naturediet. All were active and eating - two of them didn't want much - but that is not unusual - and should even out the next meal. There has been no vomiting or retching since - and they have all been playing and running around. And they all seem to be Ok with their pooh - no diarhea. So -right now it doesn't seem too serious. - Well - I will keep watching them very closely of course - then see how we are doing after their next meal.

Thank you for your concern, and I'll keep you posted.

perhaps , if it were just two of the pups , they found something and ate it that did not agree with them ! they certainly sound like they are through the worst of it to me !

This sounds very similar to the bug my lot have had for the last week, get them to the vets asap.

Last year my litter of 4 week olds had enteritis and vomiting and two ended up on drips.

I do hope they haven't caught a nasty bug, and that Zoebeverage is right - because so far so good. Another meal down, they all ate and nothing has come up this time either. So fingers crossed - but will be keeping a close eye.
And yes - there is of course a good chance some of them have tasted something they shouldn't. They live in the kitchen with us -so there are limits to what they can get hold of - but their mother, who in spite of being a lady has a beard of good length, is free to roam on several acres. There are endless possibilities of all the goodies that acumulates in that beard during the day. She is being washed of course, and more so with the puppies around - but not every time she comes and goes. - If anyone has some advice on this one I'd be interested.

Hi all, for what it`s worth, the thing I`d do with any pup or dog vomiting/dior. is miss a meal with them & put them on boiled chicken/fish(boneless) & rice. I would take their temperature very first thing tho. If there`s a lot of cases of enteritis around I`d be on the phone to the vet asap & have some medication in just in case.

hi,
what about the wormer you have been using some pups it can upset them for a couple of days, regards tina

The wormer I have used is the Panacur paste - over three days. It is supposed to be good for puppies, and the vet told me it was almost impossible to overdose. Which I did not do anyway. Also they were wormed at three weeks which is two and a half weeks ago.....if the wormer caused it wouldn't the reaction have been a bit earlier ?
But the good news is that since lunch yesterday they have all been fine and have eaten well.
