Iv applied for a job in a grooming salon as a stylist...and now im scared.ive worked by myself for a long time now and i know ill be ok with the practical but im worried what sort of questions im going to be asked.if in the past ive had a problem with not knowing what sized blade to use or anything im not 100% on id just look in one of my many grooming books or google it...now i can say that to the woman can i....

Any ideas on what ill be asked so i can prepare? im scared :-(

Of course you can say that - much prefer to have someone who checks rather than makes a mess pretending to be a know all!

Personally I work in an office so all my interviews have been competency based and quite easy to prep for.  I would imagine this is going to be more about how you get on with her and how you would fit in at the salon.

Just be yourself and be honest as if they are not happy with that then you are not going to be happy working together.

They might ask how you would deal with a difficult customer - dog or human.

I used to do horse exams when I was an instructor and in one of them none of us (including the examiner) could agree on the date I suggested for worming for ....  The original question was mine and I ended the debate by saying I am pretty sure it is what I said but I would check the box and ask my vet if I wanted to double check it.  I was told on the spot that she could not fault my answer.  You will be fine

i know i can do the job with my eyes shut,

And remember that, it's not the job making you nervous  as you know the job and enjoy it, it's the people, so you make sure that the people like you and want to work with you, make sure that you smile and appear friendly and confident, you can be confident because you know your job and remember your to be an asset to them, Roxylola says it all in that if you don't know, or your mind goes blank just be honest, there aren't many of us who actually like interviews and don't get a little nervous, people expect that. :-)

Do you have a portfolio of dogs you have groomed too, it will go a long way, along with qualifications and references?

I've always had the mindset of get in there do the interview if your meant for the job you'll get it, if not never mind something else is waiting for you, no point being nervous about it, what will be will be..... believe in yourself and others will too. :-)

Good luck I am sure you will be fine once you get started. Good points of encouragement from the others. As a customer not employer I much prefer someone who would check what she was doing rather than guess and risk an error. I was trying to find someone recently who could help me show trim my flatoat. I was impressed by the people who admitted they didn't know but would investigate rather than if they had taken my custom and done it wrong.

I wouldn't be worried, I'm a groomer too part time and even after nearly two years of working in a salon I still ask my boss occasionally which blade she thinks would be best with particular coats as let's face it sometimes we all miss the obvious! Better safe than sorry, and they'll appreciate that.

I would bring a portfolio too as you want to show your technique and finish and styles, some groomers do things differently after all.

Oh, and good luck!!!
