Depends on how well you know the stud dog owner, I wouldn't just leave any of my girls with any stud dog owner just because they are well known in the show ring if I didn't know them personally.

No i wouldnt, i have in the past left her and never really got proof of matings £1000 down and didly squat to show for it. I would do it even less now knowing more, id want to witness matings be with my bitch and rather her not be in a strange place alone.

I've never left my bitches with a stud dog owner, or had bitches to stay for my dogs.

I wouldn't want to leave one of my girls with anyone else, if the dog is a distance away, I find somewhere to stay locally or just make the long trips. My dogs live in the house and I don't have bitches here to stay either.

I have had bitches to stay for my boys.  Have to be honest, the owners miss their bitches far more than their bitches miss them.  What's to not like?  I take them to bed with me, and we have loads of games and biscuits in bed.  :-)

If they are with me I know exactly what they are like, and that they are safe away from any boys until I choose.  I have only ever had one bitch that was not happy, and I phoned the owner.  It's what I would want you to do for me.  The bitch concerned was used to kennels and missed her kennel mates.  The only time any of mine have stayed away was when they went to stay with someone who takes the girls to bed like me.

I would only ever have a bitch stay if I knew the owner was 100% trusting of my integrity.  If I thought anyone doubted which stud was used, I would actually refuse them anyway.  I couldn't deal with someone who didn't trust me.

I think this is very much breed specific, as it would be the norm in my toy breed and absolutely not done in my large breed. Indeed I have often had the DOG to stay (toy) to avoid the bitch having to travel and get extra stressed when she's mated. But my toy breed would usually quite easily settle with relative strangers, the large breed -NO chance.

I have always preferred to have the bitch and stud dog stay together or within easy reach, so my girls have stayed with the stud (with and without me) and also have on occasions had the stud dog to stay with me instead.

It is rare in my breed to be within easy distance of the stud dog for daily or alternate daily trips, and we usually know and trust each other.

As for stud fee, it is usually not payable unless there are puppies.

I have had bitches stay with me for my boys if the owners want it. I treat them as my own dogs and spoil them rotten.  However I am no t so trusting when it comes to my girls. I will not leave them with a stud.  Not really because I don't trust the stud owner, more because I think I have separation anxiety! and hate to be parted from them.

> id want to witness matings be with my bitch

I know that it is fairly common in the US if a bitch is shipped to the stud for natural service that the stud owner will photograph the tie, so you should have confirmation that a mating took place and with which dog (assuming you know him by sight as we usually do).

I wouldn't; I know my bitch's personality traits and so I can ensure she's as relaxed and unstressed as possible, improving the chances of a successful outcome. I would also need to witness the mating to know if there are likely to be problems in the future.

I left one of my bitches I was failing to get pregnant with her breeder from day 5 and she was not happy, this was a normally very confident young lady, she had been fine whilst I was still around, accepted a bath as she had puked and wee'd on herself , I sneaked off and for an hour or 2 she was fine, lots of folk about and I wasn't missed, then others left for home and this left only the breeder and her hubby, she then started panicking, hiding in tight spaces and not coming out for any type of tasty treat, submissive/marking weeing small amounts and not herself at all.

The breeder only had males, the females stayed at her Mum's so poor Chase had no doggie company,4 at home, and wasn't accepting of the humans either, I suggested that she went and got the pup of mine [10 months old] that they had, they had met up the day I arrived and got on fine, for some reason she wouldn't.

It was a week before I could get back for her due to work and 8 hr round trip, she was back to her normal self within minutes of me arriving, sitting with the breeder and her hubby, unfortunately it was too late to attempt a mating as she had gone over.

I would not do this again, if it didn't work with someone I knew well and was the breeder of the bitch I couldn't do it with anyone else.

I did put a stop to girls staying over a couple of years back, we dont have kennels and now a toddler who does mean toddler things. They always and i mean always pood or weed in the house, also after a few brought fleas in. which is costly to treat the dogs and the house, everytime unattended would do a huge river of wee :( Both boys are no longer available to stud as one getting older and other not worth the hassle. If down the line i breed again and have to travel ill B&B it close by.

I'd have to really trust the stud dog owner, personally I'd rather make the long journey as my girls aren't bothered about car journeys, if at all possible. :-)

Logically it is a good thing and having the dogs on the premises together gives a much better chance of a good mating, the dogs are more likely to get the date right through flirting and an experienced stud dog will know the exact time to mate it cuts out misses, wrong dates and wrong scientific information so there are more pluses than minuses in doing it this way. :-)

If you were just a practical person then you wouldn't think twice about it, alas most of us become very soppy with our dogs (myself included :-) ) so even if we know the stud dog owner well it's a hard pill to swallow being separated. If your bitch is happy to adapt and you feel she would be alright to stay then it's worth thinking about. (She says :-D) Alas if she is a bitch who would miss her mum too, stress is never good whilst mating or in whelp. So situations like this can also depend on the bitches character.......... along with the owners. :-D

The best thing would be if you could also stay at the stud dog owners with your girl, can they not offer this facility to you? Or the other way around, I do this with one of my stud dog owners they come to stay with me. (Obviously lifestyle comes into this possibility with work, children etc but is it possible to do this?)

Or you could book a hotel for you and your girl to stay in local to the stud dog owner if a long distance and visit daily.

The stud dog owner is no doubt trying to give you the best possible outcome if your girl stays with her and knows the mating is likely to be more successful, but she would have to really impress me that my girl would be in good hands and even then, tut, I'd just have to stay too... couldn't leave my girl.

But, there is nothing wrong in doing so........ :-)

Males won't always perform on strange ground which is why the bitches tend to do the travelling.
