Ok, I have read everything there is to read on CD and in books on housetraining. I have been trying to train Precious (female yorkie) for 7 weeks now. She STILL has accidents in the house. Is this normal??
Whatever room I'm in, I have her with me. She doesn't leave my site. But in a split second if I look away from her, you got it, she wees. I take her out every hour, I stay out with her to make sure she goes, if she doesn't go in 15 mins. to 1/2 hour, I bring her back in. Then 2 seconds latter, she wees on the carpet!! When we are in the kitchen, sometimes she will let me know she has to go out, but on the whole I have to just take her out. She is 4 months old now. Please tell me, is there a light at the end of this housetraining tunnel??

Oh Shirl !!!
yes there is light at the end and she is doing so well
I must admit if i caught murph in the act I would tell him 'NO'
but if you don't see it then you can't really scold her --It is normal though
I remembr when murph was around 4-5 months old and were having friends round -I turned my back for all of 30 seconds and there was a huge pile of sh*t in the middle of the living room floor ....you would swear someone had let an elephant in :D and the smell :eek:and boy does it linger !!!!
so be thankfull for small mercies :D ;)

If she is 4 months old she should be able to hold it for 4 to 5 hrs, maybe don't take her out every hour. Watch her and run her out just before she go's. try catching her just as she is about to squat and make a loud noise (I clap and say no) which causes them to stop then scope her up and straight outside. When u know she has to go get a treat and go to the door and teach her to bark and treat and outside and say out go pee or whatever u use then treat/praise.Let her try telling u, so far u have been doing all the thinking for her. Good luck and hope this helps some.

Thanks Dollface, I'm going to give this a try with the treat to get her to ask to go out. I know she can hold it for 4 to 5 hours, because she has been dry at night for 3 weeks now. It's just during the day I have the problem with her. I never thought of it this way, me doing all the thinking for her. I guess I have been. Thanks for the advise! Shirl :D

Shirl,

Keeping her out for 15-30 minutes is too long. No more than 5-10 minutes is my advice. It makes it more difficult for the pup to understand that outside is where she should wee, always. Rather than her being outside for 30 minutes and eventually having to wee, almost by chance.

I agree that when you "catch them in the act" indoors you need to startle her, even if she is in midstream, so to speak. A sharp "NO" should do it. If that does not, try shaking an empty soda can filled with a few coins. Take her outside immediately and she should resume fairly quickly - and then praise her effusively.

Keep at it, if she's asking you to go out when she's in the kitchen she's well on the way to understanding what you want her to do.

Stacey

Thanks Stacey, Read your post this morning but didn't have time to respond. I did what you said today and only kept her out for 10 minutes at a time. She usually went right away, but when she didn't if the time was up, then I brought her back in. Only one wee on the carpet so far today. Working on all these ideas, hope to get this under control shortly. Thanks for the advise! Shirl :D

Thanks Liz, you have given me hope. :-) I have caught her in the act and I clap my hands and say NO! But sometimes my eyes are looking at dirty dishes to be washed and off she goes. If we are upstairs and she has an accident, I take her to the kitchen. She knows that she has done wrong. I guess it shows on my face. :-( I'll keep plugging along here and hope in the end she will get the idea. Thanks. Shirl :D

Not good for me :( ILOVEYORKIES !!!! I have all this to look forward too...!!??well at least you know you are not alone..my dog seems to do it on the floor in the absolute MIDDLE of the kitchen when she is left ..if we are there she looks at me and sees me going on like an idiot how proud I am of her when she wees on the paper but when I go out and leave her to do the school run or over night it is all over the kitchen..I wonder if she is rebelling over me not being there? (as when I clean it up I ask her why she did it nicely and she looks right at me )
we have her less than 2 weeks and she knows the routine well ...kids in bed at 7 and I come to the kitchen to clean up..wash etc... and she waits by the door to come sit on the sofa with me...is she mad at me for not doing this ALL day with her???she will let me know she needs to wee on the sofa by trying to get down go to the kitchen and return to come back up..if she knows to do this ..why not when I leaver her...???just saw ILOVEYORKIES dilema and this had been bugging me for a couple days also.

Hi Melmel, Wish I had some answers for you. :-( Precious would wee or poo right in front of the kitchen door, so in the morning when you got up half asleep you opened the door and stepped right in it!!!!!!! Glad those days are over!!! I do stay up pretty late to let her out at night, the last time being 11:00 or 11:30. And I have to get up at 6:00 to get my son off to school. But that is 7 hours so I guess I have accomplished something!! :-) She just stopped going at night all of a sudden. Don't know how to tell you to stop your pup. The only difference is I didn't use the paper as I told you in another post. Day time is my problem at the moment, as you can see by my post. Just got frustrated and posted. Hope no one minds. :-) Hang in there Melmel, they said there is a light at the end of the tunnel for us. Shirl :D

well I have found this site here with all these experts a great help...I didn't mind her going on the paper by the door and it was not much in the night like one wee maby even one poop so I thought she is nearly there to stop the night thing ..I honestly am so sleep deprived I can not handle the night thing..I go sometimes 12 and even 1 am and get up 6:45 and I really need 10 hrs sleep or I constanly get the cold etc..so I guess that affects my dog training ...I did try but I just barely got over diving out my bed for the kids crying at night after 4 and 5 yrs !!!!I do pay the price though sanitizing my kitchen everyday as I am a cleanliness fanatic. :)maby in a month when she can last the 7 hrs I will do it outside...

ILoveYorkies,
Another thing u can do when u know she has to go and u take her out and nothing, put her in her kennel for about 10 to 15 min then back outside. If she goes great, if not back in the kennel again and repeat. This has worked with T-Bone when I was house training her. Good luck.

ttfn :)

Great Idea Dollface!!! That way she won't come back in and go on the carpet!! Thanks so much! Shirl :D

Bless your heart Melmel. I think all of us moms know what its like to be sleep deprived. Its tough and having a puppy is like having a baby again!! :-) I think your doing great. And yes it does help to be able to come on here and ask questions from people who know a whole lot more than I do. Shirl :D

if its any consonlation I am in the same boat...Jessie is 6 months and as most of you know I have had her only a few weeks, well she has only just started going all night and being left short periods with no mess. Just patience and knowing they will get there in the end is whats needed...although remind me of that next time she messes will you :D

Hi Shirl,
Just got back from Viva Las Vegas this evening and came onto Champdogs straight away (who wants to unpack anyway?...) so just caught up with your thread.
Toydogs can be difficult and frustrating- I know, I've got Italian Greyhounds and they were a NIGHTMARE! But they are pretty good now, after a lot of hard work and accidents.
As you may know, I live just around the corner from you and would be happy to pop round and give you any help and hints on how I trained mine. Of course, you realise that it is just an excuse to get my hands on your pup for a cuddle........
Just let me know if you need any help.
Liz
