Im sure ive read such a thing, and i know there is a similar thread but this is slightly different so i thought id ask. Is there an implant for entire dogs that mimics castration, I want to see whether this would make a difference before actually going for the chop. Hes abit grumpy with the other dogs not naughty or sexual, just wants to be top dog but cant

You're thinking of Suprelorin. :-)
Thanks Anyone used this with positive or noticeable results. Can it be removed like the human implanon? How much does it cost

Depends on what you mean by noticeable. It does make them infertile for about 6 months and the testicles do shrink after a while. The coat around the injection site can change colour and/or fall out -on my dog it turned black. Cost I seem to remember was around £60. I used it on my very nervous dog before going ahead with castration, to ensure it would not make him worse. (It did not.) Once implanted it CANNOT be removed, it dissolves over a period of months. Only difference I noticed (same now when he has been castrated) was that he became infertile. The dog will stay fertile for up to 6 week after implantation and mine accidentally mated one of my bitches almost 6 weeks to the day after it and she did not get pregnant. So he still wanted to mate, but then he still does, like all my other neutered dogs.

I've used it and used it for a few years on one dog. He gained weight easier and his balls shrank... He in himself became more tolerant of unknown males and considering putting him back on it as have a bitch, now while it makes them infertile I'd not 100% trust it around any in season bitch. Also his balls took around 18mnths to go back to normal and also can take longer than the 6mnths before full fertility to come back.
There are studies going on in using it on bitches and removing the implant after 2 weeks. This is for Suprelorin..
Also short term is Tardak which lasts around 1 month and made no difference to my boy..
Suprelorin now is charged at £30 in my vets, I was the first to request it at £90 and as they use it so often now they have dropped the price..
The girls in the house now are pups one being his daughter and another a pug so i dont mind the infertility, no plans to have him out to stud in the near future but as he is a young dog and has had 2 litters i dont want to be drastic and chop them off. I also dont want to do that and it not have any effect! Hes just abit grumpy testosterone filled male. Extra grumpy with the other male in the house Old Dogue and i like harmony in the house. If it has a positive effect then I might look into castration in the future, he gets very little work and doesnt enjoy the show ring. Hes dark brindle so coat change wouldnt matter nor would weight gain.

I used it on my TT boy to see how neutering might affect him - it did reduce his tendancy to be pushy bullying little ratbag with my other dogs and although it made his fear aggression towards people slightly worse, we did eventually neuter him.
I believe it is a FAR more accurate indicator of what actual castration will be like than Tardak and after a friend of a friends horrific experience with her dog on Tardak, I wouldn't touch that with someone elses barge pole (took her normal, happy dog and turned him into a reactive, anxious, depressed animal who damn near killed another dog!)
Hes a fab people dog loves everyone of every age creed colour and even if wearing the dreaded high vis so this isnt a consideration for us. Just bearing in mind the 3 week testosterone surge, hope no girls decide to come in or ill be keeping him on his tod away from both girls and other boy. I wonder why vets dont recommend this as a precursor to how the will react once snipped? oh yeh cause it costs less and might cause a few red faces when it doesnt make the dog act like its had a week in dog borstal straight away!

I had a Suprelorin implant on one of my Papillons as he was getting very aggressive to the other boys when the bitches were in season. I was led to believe it only lasted six months which would have worked out well as it was the winter and I wouldn't be showing for a while. This was sixteen months ago and he is still not back to normal!
I contacted the Suprelorin people as I did wonder if there was an injection that would counteract it but sadly no and it can last up to eighteen months in a toy breed! They did however say it can be removed!! Not sure I like the sound of that!
I have shown him and have a letter from my vet to say that that he has had an implant. It is really embarrassing when I see the judge struggling to find his testicles. I usually explain what has happened, but most of them penalise him by not placing him as high as they would have done.
Never again will I have it done on a show dog.
did it make a difference to his behaviour though?
Were in talks with good friends in the next village to see if they would be interested in taking him on, they have no kids no dogs and after much thought we both think it would be really good for him as he has been really grumpy this week. They did originally want one from our pug litter but finances were tight even though we wouldnt have charged them full purchase price. Just waiting to hear back from there landlord and he can go for a few days see how he gets on, hopefully he will be like a different dog when we see him.
He will be so happy not having to share his humans and settee spots, hopefully will go to work with them as they have a jewellers, sit in the window looking dapper.

I had one put into my now deceased schipperke boy, totally messed him up and never again will I use it. He was sterile for 2 1/2 yrs, there is a risk of infertility and never returning to normal for some boys after this implant. He became agrophobic, out for a wee then digging the door to get back in to get in his cage and turn his back on the world, vet said she'd seen this sort of behaviour before in other used stud males after the implant so wasn't surprised by it.
