Silent season is when all the signs are there bar for the bleeding, surprisingly they can still get pregnant although with no bleeding the hormones must be out of balance.

Split season is where they get started as normal but it doesn't last into the " standing " period and everything goes back to normal, a few weeks later it will start again and she can get pregnant this time.

one of my girls has very quiet seasons, but last year two had seasons (including her) which didn't seem to come to anything - I got worried (even posted on here) but now I hear that there was a lot of this about last year - possibly due to the weird weather we're having, so I'm hoping that they'll both have 'proper' seasons next time - particularly for this one girl who I'd like a litter from but this will be the last year I'll try (she's had a litter before)

Thanks for the replies .... neither seem to explain this very peculiar season we have had this time..... think I may give my vet a call and get her checked out for my own peace of mind as it all seems to be over in 14 days.

Never had a problem before like this.. normally my bitches have had the usual 21-25 day cycle mainly coming in on time or within weeks of the due date .
This girl  firstly come in approx 8 wks late, she then was showing signs of starting ie  swollen  but no discharge although flirting with my boy and he showing slight interest in her so I separated them, on about the 8th day after checking her everyday she had a show..my boy was beside himself not eating and crying at night I found he was better if I crated one or the other for short periods throughout the day so they could see each other where she would flirt shamelessly infront of the crate and vice versa...but he was a lot less stressed.. this went on for about for 4 days then suddenly overnight on the 13th day she stopped bleeding and flirting , he wasnt interested in the slightest and went back to playing with his toys, her behaviour went back to her normal self... at no time have these 2 dogs been left alone where they could get to each other, seperated by locked doors and crates with pens infront, I am luckily home all day.
My boy has now gone back to his normal self and back to his normal sleeping area in the kitchen quite happily , I had been crating him and my girl is with her mother... because of the timings I am still keeping them seperate until we are past the 21 days for my own peace of mind.
Oh and before anyone asks why they are entire they are my show dogs.

I am fully expecting her to come back into season  or would this be classed as a silent season or split season if she comes back in... having never experience a bitch have this type of season .. Usually I have to seperate them past the 21 days as they are still interested in each other until the bitter end :) ... its very unusual...can anyone give any suggestions who have seen this in the past.

My friend's Newfie had a split season last year and went on to be mated and have a litter from the 2nd half of the season which was about a month later.

On another post I wrote that a couple of my bitches were out of sync and know of others who are late. Recently my 2 started playing around sniffing each other and I saw one flag her tail and present herself(!) so I checked her - no blood, swelling, nothing. Have been checking daily still nought, a watched pot never boils so they say!

I have had three bitches mated on restarting a season, (split or false start), though they started again with only a week or two, so I termed them false starts.

I am not looking to mate this bitch ..just longing for it to be over so we can get back to normal! Thanks everyone for the replies...
