any electrians that can give me some advice please,

we have an earth wire that runs under the sink and we where told
today that the wire should be attatched to the pipe which it does and then attatched
to the sink which it does,

then told the 2nd earth wire that is there under the sink
needs to be attached to the stop cock,

the stop cock has plastic attachments
into it from the floor and above so is there a need for the earth to be put onto
the stopcock, and also if i do how do i do it do i need to get a bracket to fit
on the stop cock and attach the earth wire

this is something that i am confused about the electrician has said as the
2nd earth wire will not reach to the stopcock he is going to have to lay
new earth wire from the box 3 rooms away through the loft and chase it down the
kitchen wall and along under the sink and onto the stopcock

HELP ADVICE NEEDED

If the second earth wire isn't long enough to reach the stop cock why does the replacement have to come from three rooms away? Can the electrician not cut a new length to go from the sink to stop cock?

Whatever you do please make sure you follow the new rules :- http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/uploads/br/BR_PDF_PTP_NEWRULESenglish.pdf

Your electricain should know them.
It may effect the sale of your house in the future if you have not done it properly.

Well, I am baffled - potentially the stopcock needs bonding but I am not grasping why it needs bonding to a sink three rooms away..

From my limited knowledge of installing an earth spike, metal objects ie the stopcock, must be bonded to an earth wire that is connected to an earth spike (a special metal rod driven into the ground) - I suppose that the nearest connection to the earth spike is where the sink is, so a new wire has to be run :) :)

Ok, I consulted the oracle that is.... My Dad

If the stopcock is plastic above and plastic below he doesn't see why that wants earthing in the first place, plastic don't conduct lectrickery.

He said some rude words about earthing your sink to a stopcock many rooms away, and said to tell you to ask your electrician/plumber/builder whoever it is.. to SHOW you exactly where it says that is necessary in the latest edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations (the latest edition btw is the 17th)

He suspects the guy is working from an older edition and what is suggested is not necessary in a domestic setting with presumably mainly plastic pipework and modern electrics.

thankyou everyone , we have asked the boss to come out, i do not see why the earthcable has to be run from the main electric box three rooms away and chased into the wall and then run the back of the kitchen units into the sink when there is already two earth wires underneath it to start with, so he is comming out friday will see what happens then
