I have a 6 month old poodle and she did great learning to go
outside. But sometimes it's very wet and cold outside and
I would like to give her an option of going in the house but
in her litter box. I bought a doggie litter box. She is
very unwilling to do this. we knew she wanted out and we
took her to the litter box and she wimpered and kept trying to
get out. we figured after a while, she would just release
but she held out for a half hour and I ddint' want her to hurt
herself so I let her out and she got drenched.
Is it a good idea to train them to do both, will they have a
preference or will I undo all the housetraining I have done so
far? And, how should I go about getting her to use the litter.

Why not think about getting her a waterproof jacket to pop on when its wet and cold outside to keep the worst of the weather off her. I think its far better to let them toilet outside - especially if they prefer it.

Sorry Mikki but this is a dog! She will come to no harm going out in the rain and will possibly gain a lot of benifit. I cannot agree to this mollycoddling!

I stick a coat on my old dog when its lashing down now John. He couldn't care less but it sure saves me a lot of towelling down afterwards now :)

I've no objections to anyone using a coat to make their life a bit easier Lara but a Litter Tray! Apart from it sending all the wrong signals to the puppy about going indoors it is not necessary! Dogs are dogs, not little people and should be treated like dogs.

He he he. I read your post that little people use litter trays not dogs - and I is little (ahem short) :)

I agree with you John, this is a poodle, for heaven's sake. They are water dogs! They were bred to go into water - a bit of rain won't do them any harm. And the poor thing will get terribly upset if she has to "go" indoors, having been taught to go outside. It would be like having to wet your bed.
She's been well trained to go outside, so please don't undo all your good work!

Mikki, I really do think your asking for trouble if you try to train her to go in the litter box. IMHO you will undo all the training it took for her to go outside. They have rain jackets that you could slip on her. Better to get one of those I would think, than confusing her to now go in a litter box. I just keep towels by the kitchen door to dry my dog off when the wheather is bad. Shirl :D
