At the moment I have a gas fire in front of a closed up fireplace.

I would like to open it back up but don't know what type of trade person I need?

Do I go to a fireplace shop, would they remove the gas fire and sort out the chimney assuming it needs a flue removing?

I'm not so good on these type of projects and don't want to go looking daft in the shop!

I would ask a general builder, but make sure you get a qualified gas man to make the gas safe after removal.

Yes an established fireplace shop will likely offer the entire package of works to you if you purchase your new surround etc from them. I would be more inclined to get them to run the whole project as in my experience it is cheaper and they have the expertise as their fitter will be rearranging people's fireplaces every week.

This is the sort of thing you want - the guy who owns this is an expert in flues!!   http://www.topstak.co.uk/

Open it up and do what with it?  Fit an open fire, a wood burner, re-fit a gas fire but further back into the opening, or simply open up the space?

What you want to end up with will determine who best to use.  If you want to re-fit any type of fire then a fireplace specialist will probably be the best best for advice and the most economical.  If you are opening up the space but not fitting a fire with combustible fuel then a general builder might be a good option.

I have a fancy to have an open fire.

I don't know why because I'm aware of the pitfalls....no heat at the back of the room, making it up and having to light it, having to wait for it to get going before you get any heat from it, no off button!

But don't they look cozy, homely and welcoming?

Or would one of those little living flame gas fires be more sensible?

I love an open fire but yes, some can be more about looks than heat.  Have a look at Jetmaster though, they're more efficient and you still get the benefits of an open flame (this is what we have)

I'd suggest you talk to a fireplace specialist and get them to look at your room, your chimney, and your preferences.  They'll be able to do some calculations to get you the best type of fire for your situation and can do the whole works if you wish.  It's good to get a recommendation though, if you tell us where you are perhaps someone here might know of a reputable company
