Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / two neutered dogs wanting bitch in season
- By Romside [gb] Date 07.11.12 20:34 UTC
Right went out to a lady today to help her doggie with under arm knots.this little bitch is in season she couldnt come to me so i went to her, then we gets talking and she says that this little girl shes only had a year and has 5 dogs....all neutered.the youndest hadnt been neutered but as soon as she got the bitch she had him done so we're talking hes been neutered now for a good 12 months....her 4 year old dog is weeing up her belongings over the bitch and will cover any ground that the younger one covers....the younger dog has actually tied with this little girl(all same breed) and i know he cannot produce anything but why is he still tieing?
shes now going to get the bitch speyed, which she didnt think she had to do when she first got her as all the boys were done...
she asked me if it would ever stop just over time to which i replied maybe not...some dogs dont lose the instinct to mate, but i think having the bitch speyd will...(as there will be no season so need for this behaviour)Right??
anyone eles have anything to add or correct??

It is not upto the dog to tie, it is the bitch that holds the dog with a tie.
A fair few think that a neutered dog will not mate, he will & dependant upon how long he has been neutered, is to wether a litter will be forthcoming(unlikely if he has been done over 12 mths).

I've always said that the only thing neutering a male dog achieves is stopping pups from being produced -they will still keep all their male behaviour and have no idea they are missing bits. Mine all mate and tie with bitches in season, cock their legs over everything etc whether entire or not (well actually the  ENTIRE males don't mate and tie as they get separated of course!) -the reason for why I now swear I will never again have another male dog once the ones I have are gone.........which should take something like 12 years LOL. So yes, the only thing to do is spay the btich. It always makes more sense to do that anyway as an unspayed bitch can eventually develop pyometra if kept entire all her life, but an entire male dog is far less likely to have problems.

If a dog is capable of achieving a full erection including the bulbous knot near the base swelling up, then he is capable of being tied with a bitch. It is her body parts that constrict the male, behind that 'knot' that achieves the tie.

Castration does NOT prevent a dog from achieving an erection, nor does it prevent him finding the smell of a bitch in season interesting, nor does it prevent humping - hes got no b*lls, not no pulse!

So yes, castrated males can and do tie with willing bitches, seen it with my own eyes and thats what started me questioning the whole 'castrate anything that moves it will fix all problems' malarkey.

I have absolutely no doubt that even though its been 10 years since he last did it, he'd know what to do in a SHOT if he had the opportunity again (which he never will!) - in fact when my last entire bitch was in season, he behaved exactly the way I would expect an experienced stud to behave, he knew exactly when she was worth bothering with and there was no faffing about before that time (and then almost immediately that time arrived, she went on a short hols to her breeder  )
