Hi,
Just wanted all your advice please, stan is a male almost 3 entire newfie, for a couple of days he has been not quite himself, not enough to worry but not right, untill this morning,i fed as usual at 6 am,all ok,dropped hubby off to work at 8 am and came home at 810 am, to him wimpering, opened door,he kept looking as if he wanted to go down onto the grass to go to the loo,but was scared,so,left him go for a minute,he was unable to sit or lie down, pacing, panting, drooling,i immediatly fear bloat, get kids and newf into car, drop kids off and race to vets, vets check tummy 3 times completly soft, temperature normal, gums pink, now, before i got him to the vets i tried to move him by lifting back end up and he squealed, told this to vet,vet checks back left leg and no reaction, checks back right leg and newfie is unhappy, restless etc,so vet thinks its some kind of injury, gives painkiller and we are told to come back tomorrow morning for a check up.I get home,he runs into garden for a poo, seems a tiny bit lopsided as he poos, not putting equal weight on both back legs as he poos(then i could be imagining that)as soon as he poos,he runs onto patio where he imeadiatly starts whimpering and squealing and rubbing his bottom on the floor,he takes a while to settle,i check his back end and he wont allow me to touch it,anus looks normal colour but he is very distressed when i prod it(but didnt do that when vet put thermometre up there)checked back legs for matts, sores, anything and all clear,he has some sores on his testiclas, but that is not unusal for him and we treat that, recently ha has been having alot of hotspots as well.So what do o do,he is fast asleep now, could it be anal glands, never ever have i had to empty them so i dont know what im doing, could it be some kind of tissue damage or even both,im hoping you can offer a little advice or experiance in any of these issues
thanks

What are his stools like? If they are soft then they are not expressing his anal glands naturally which then leads to them becoming impacted, infected and then burst. If his stools are fine then he needs to go back to the vet for manual evacuation, if they are soft then give him some steamed pureed pumpkin/butternut squash, for his size 2 desert spoonfuls or 2 icecube size pieces if you have some frozen in the freezer[great standby as it works for constipation and diarrhoea within hours].

Hope this helps

thanks for responding,he is going as normal prob around three times a day, stoors are rollable and normal soft, not hard, but not runny if this makes sense,i used to smell his anal glands,a fishy odd stink and i thought it was them cleaning themselves out,i didnt realise they could be so painfull,i am afraid to try myself incase i do it wrong or hurt him,god knows how the vet will manage,we had a hard job to get him to stand up today, shall i wait till morning or go back now,he seems ok at the mo,exhausted but ok

This sounds just like my nans dog was a few months back , we thought he had caught his testicles as they were red raw , we treat layered with sudocrem then got him to the vets the next day.She found nothing wrong other than his anal glands which she emptied there and then and gave fusidin cream for his sores. He was as right as rain when he got home and has been since , so I'd say it possibly could be his glands need emptying . I would ask the vet to do it tomorrow anyway , it will be worth a try . Hope he is feeling more like himself soon :)

been bact to vets, glands emptied, vet said not too bad etc etc, now, vet looked at stans testicals, and basically want them off, says that if they dont heal with the steriod, painkiller and antibiotics, they need to come off, apprently as they are warm and infected, then he is infertile(not that i was going to breed anyway)also,it will protect from cancer,to be honst,i dont know what to think,he has always had issues with his bits and bobs and up until now we have managed to keep it under control,i worry without them it will mess his skin, coat mood etc up,please acan you advise

hi joanne,
personally i have had a male newf neuted and would NEVER have it done again, ( unless there was no choice ) as it does effect the coat, my boys got a simlur heavy coat to yours and the under coat felts up something awful, which is so hard to look after, can take hours to groom though, am considering clipping his coat down now he is older.
how is he in himself now ?

What issues have you had with them?  I have entire boys who use their testicles as brakes, they leave them behind when they slide through narrow gaps, they squish them when they go through stiles, and on one memorable occasion my youngest dog managed to stick his to an icy rock in the river!!  He has also had to have a course of antibiotics when he got sores on his testicles after being in kennels for a few days - I suspect he left them on the cold floor (daft twit)

After all that no one has ever suggested removing them

If it's surface issues then I can't see that removing them is really necessary - if he has an internal infection of some sort, affecting his testicles then I'd want to know more as that seems a little unlikely particularly as you say they aren't enlarged.  Oh and testicles are supposed to be warm and can in some cases be quite hot - I'm sure that's why my boys sleep upside down in their classic "willy to the wind'' pose :)

dogs a babe that made me laugh, issues we have are basically not bad,he likes cold floors and the outside,so they get cold, get some sores on which he licks for england,we treat with hibiscrub like with his hot spots, they heal and all is well,i have never bought into the whole prevent cancer as i am pretty sure that the risk is low, also,id ont want to put him through any unessisary opp and im worried about his skin if he has the opp as i know it can ruin it,so then i wil be in more hotspot trouble etc etc, stans are huge(compared to my pug)so they are bound to get scrapped,i supose she frightened me a bit,he is on antibiotics,he is alot more perky now, flattened me wen i cam home after popping up the shop :)

I feel a bit silly saying this, but here goes anyway! :)

Would the Suprelorin implant help matters at all, in as much as the testicles would shrink and therefore there would not be so much surface area to get scrapped/infected?

Oh yes that's what we had after the stuck on a rock episode and leaving them on a cold floor.  Boys are such dimwits aren't they :)

Barrier cream is often the best long term option for protection but ideally you want Stan to leave them alone whilst they heal too.  I'd suggest udder cream before each walk if you can get it - try your nearest farm supplies shop or somewhere like Hyperdrug.  I'll see if I can find some when I get back and check the name for you.  The barrier cream will protect him against mud splashes and should prevent friction burns.  In the meantime Hibiscrub is brilliant for keeping the wound clean BUT it also has a drying affect on the skin which could be counter productive in this instance and might make the skin on his testicles itchy.  I tend to use Hibiscrub first then apply a natural antiseptic cream which moisturises the area too and I like Ultrasalve for this (in fact their whole range is good).

Hope this helps x  Poor Stan

I am very very allergic to hibiscrub, to the point of needing to take antihistamines if I come in contact with it in order to not need to peel off my own skin!
Apparently this is more common that I ever realised (told this by a nurse) as it is really strong stuff.
Might it be worth trying hot salt water as it has an antiseptic effect and was what I would always use on wounds on horses back in the days before hibiscurb (20 years ago lol)  And to be honest I think it does a better job.

thankyou very much will look into this now, well he does like the cold, colder the better, may have to try longjohns on him, surprised he hasnt had frost bite bless him,he seems alot happier since the anal gland bit,i was surprised and happy that bit was done,so far its was roughly 80 today,40 yesterday, and 60 2 weeks ago for the rabbit who had suspected g i stasis, dont think i will be getting much this xmas,at least my lads are ok

Wouldn't chemical castration cause the same problem with the coat by suppressing the reproductive hormones?

Udder salve at Hyperdrug - more expensive than buying direct from a farm store

...and here's another from Mole Valley Farmers

I'd probably do some research to check active ingredients but I can't see why you'd need to pay too much for it :)

If he licks them a lot then he may be causing some of the sores.

A friend found Vaseline rubbed onto them protected them from getting sore, and probably stopped him licking them somewhat too.  he had lovely soft and smooth ball skin LOL
