Do pig ears and rusks have the same potential problems as rawhide strips for dogs? I let my pup gnaw on compressed rawhide bones, but only when I am around. I have never given her strips of rawhide because I am afraid she will tear them apart too quickly and risk choking on them.
I am curious to know if pig ears and rusks are roughly the same in texture as rawhide.
Also, I have read here on the board that pig ears are a rich food and can cause digestive problems. Are they recommended for puppies?
Regards,
Stacey

Personally I've had more problems with pigs ears with my dogs than rawhide chews, I don't feed either now, and when I did I only fed the 'whole' raw hide chews (the ones with the knots in the end, and def not the 'shoes' or balls - too many small pieces to be swallowed wholes IMHO)

Hi
My dogs have raw hide and pigs ears which they love..but always supervised and I throw it away when they get to the last little bit...you know the bit that they always try to swallow without chewing first. :)

Some dogs are intolerant to pork so pigs ears will go straight through them and give them an upset tum.
I give mine pigs ears as a treat now and again but only under supervision, and the same goes for the deture chews they get .I dont find the Pigs ears upset them at all but they do stink a lot( the ears not the dogs)
I made the big mistake of giving them paddywack once....DONT GO THERE!!!!! I didn't think such little dogs could poop sooooo much

My two just LOVE pigs ears! They can smell 'em a mile off (and so can we - they really do hum) and when you produce one you become the Goddess of all good things. I have never known such intoxicating power!
The most amusing trick is to balance the ear on top of their heads with the command to 'Leave it'. They won't move a muscle and go all cross eyed trying to look at it whilst waiting for the 'good boy' meaning they can eat it. You can do the same thing with doggy chocolate drops by squishing them onto the top of their noses whereby they melt - just watch the fools writhe and squiggle tyring to lick it all off! Just call me Cruella - De -Lady G! (I must get out more)
Do you think the manufacturers make pigs ears complete with an obedience spell? I'm telling you, you say: Sit. Down. Roll over. Stay. Up. Leave it. Bring me my paper. Make me a cup of tea. Do the washing up. And it's done! I think the last two commands were directed at my other half actually - so the spell works on everyone! Hurrah! I think we're onto something here...
I allow my two to eat the whole thing but do notice that the dobe does try and swallow the last chunk whole. He then spends hours happily regurgitating it and chewing it all up again. Not the best of table manners I know - but he's enjoying himself.

Lady G,
You have really given me a good laugh! I am afraid my hubby wouldn't do the washing up for a pig's ear, but if I taught him to balance a litre of whiskey on his nose, perhaps I could get him to at least empty the dishwasher. :-)

Gosh, pigs ears sound horrible. Most likely Abby will love them, stink and all.
