Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Adaptil, does it work?

As topic states has anyone used it and found it to work? I have a very highly strung dog who is always on patrol and someone recommended it to calm him down.

I have never used it in fact I was wondering what the difference between it and DAP was. Didn't know it was DAP under a different name<g>

Have you tried Zylkene for the fireworks? I had really amazing results with it last year on my two noise sensitive collies. I started it a week before the 5th and kept giving them it for a few days after just in case of stray fireworks and they were brilliant, so much better than ever before.

No I haven't another one I've always meant to look into. Where do you get yours from?

medicanimal.com usually, but sometimes hyperdrug, wherever is cheapest at the time. I must go order some now while I remember because the collies were much more relaxed without being doped up at all.

Anne kindly tells me that if you're a new shopper at medicanimal and put my email address in as the friend that referred you I get a voucher! Anyone else buying Zylkene feel free to pm me for my email address :-D

Also it's on offer at 10% off and if it's a first order you get another 10% :-D

Both Adaptil and Zylkene have research behind them which prove that they are effective:

http://veterinaryrecord.bmj.com/content/163/3/73.abstract

http://www.journalvetbehavior.com/article/S1558-7878(07)00203-1/abstract   [To get that link to work, you need to copy and paste it so you get the whole thing.]  Here, Zylkene is found to be as effective as prescription-only anti-anxiety meds.

You might also want to try a Thundershirt.

I actually just won an adaptil diffuser from Discover Dog's facebook page. I have used it next to Nando's crate. Usually he doesn't sleep in it any more and is free to sleep out of it if he so chooses but during firework period I put him in it as a 'den' with blankets over it.

Not sure if the adaptil had any effect as I only started using it yesterday but he pretty much slept through the fireworks last night which is unusual for him.

For 'ideal' results though I think you should use them for a week or so beforehand.
