Regretfully, Buddy is still barking at other dogs when we go out for walks and it's getting to the point where I am really frustrated with him. I've tried all the usual things (treats/ignoring/grabbing his face) but have had no success at all. It's not as if he's on the look-out for other dogs, just that when he does see one he just has to make his presence known ! If he gets to meet the dog he is fine but of course not everyone wants to stop - I suspect a lot are put off by the noise, in any case.

Mostly I walk him with my older dog (who IS always on the look-out for other dogs, but never barks at them - he just likes to be aware !). But for the past few weeks I have walked Buddy separately to try to get to grips with this problem. It has made no difference at all.

He used to be quite skittish about passing people but the treats have helped a lot with this.
My hubby has suggested a quick flick (with my fingers) on his nose to get his attention. It would certainly go against the grain to do this but part of me does agree that a quick sting might make him realise he's doing wrong.

Any thoughts before I resort to putting my woolly hat over his head ?! :D

hi Joyce
have you tried the jif lemon ??--without the lemon though ;)
fill it with water and then when he starts give him a quick squirt and a 'NO'-and hopefully he'll be so startled by the water that he won't bark !!
other than that ( which is very satisfieing :D ) a couple of baloclavas:D
or maybe see if a training class would let you go and use them as stooge dogs to walk past
Liz :)

I've seen mesh-type "muzzles" designed to stop a dog from barking in Pets At Home, made of stretchy material, I think. Has anyone tried one?

Try hiring an Aboistop collar, the sort that are sound activated. A citrus (you can now get it without the smell) jet spurts up everytime they bark, works wonders - I know I've used it and once they know what it does you then only have to put it on without switching it on. Really worth a go.

Yes, Liz, I've tried squirting water at him - he just has a quick shake, then carries on barking !
The stooge dogs is a good idea but I would need them to walk around the area where we live to have any real effect, I think.
I've thought about the Aboistop collar but it would mean he would have 3 things around his neck - his nomal collar, the halti and the aboistop ! :) It might be a bit much for a little dog :D - but I'd be interested to know where they can be hired from.

Thanks for replies.

Aboistop Master Plus collars (remote controlled ones) can be hired , just do a SEARCH and type in UK ABOISTOP COLLAR HIRE , brings up a few sites

Thanks, Melody. One site stated that the collar comes in one size only and was suitable for dogs over 8kg. Buddy weighs less than this, so it might not be suitable after all. Unless the weight would pull his head down so low that he'd miss seeing the other dogs completely.....!! ;)
