Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Mum still regurgitating for 12 week old pup
- By annieg3 [gb] Date 29.10.12 20:27 UTC
Is there anything I can do to discourage this?? The little girl I have kept is coming up to twelve weeks and mum is still regurgitating food for her. I am whipping pup away when i can catch her doing it but there doesnt seem to be any pattern and the little minx has started doing it outside when I lose sight of them for a moment. Is it just a case of being on top of them all the time or is there some magic remedy lol. Pup is looking like a little barrel at the moment so hoping I can sort this out soon.

keeping them apart after Mum has been fed till her food has reached the point of no return is all I can suggest

Yes, I know deep down I will have to do that. Its just the logistics of it. Pup wants to be with mum and gran and mum wants to be with pup etc. Will carry on following them around I suppose. Thank-you

Is Mum actually loosing condition?

If not then cut pups food a bit to allow for extra meals up Mums if you find she has done ti.  She should stop when she feels ready.

Out of interest was weaning started early or late.

I start mine pretty early (even if they only take a tiny bit) before Mum has ever contemplated doing it, as I have been told my breed can tend to be primitive in this regard, but I have never had one do it.

Wondered if it was because I start pups as son as they show interest in Mums food, usually somewhere between their eyes opening and 18 days.

Keeping them apart is about the only thing I could think of too. I think with Hetty, the puppy I kept, I tried to do a few little training sessions or something after mealtimes so puppy was with me and mum was in a different room while digesting, or just have them on the sofa for cuddles so I could watch for any regurgitating attempts. To be honest my bigger problem was how many MONTHS it took to persuade Ellie that she didn't need to clear up the poo any more! :-D

No Brainless. Mum is very well, in fact the best she has been for a while as she had a rough time after whelping with one thing and another (diarrhoea and then mastitis) I started to wean pups at 3 1/2 weeks so later than you are doing!! Pup was refusing breakfast but I got over that by putting her kibble into a kong which seems to make her want to eat it. The regurgitating usually happens in an evening but not always. I think pup is actually cutting down herself but of course, she needs to be eating her puppy kibble and not mum's adult food. Having said that, mum sometimes finished off pup's food so she is getting back her own kibble by default lol.  Hopefully mum will stop doing this soon. Funnily enough, sometimes she regurgitates then wont allow pup near it and eats it herself!!! Maybe that is a step towards her not doing it for pup.

I know what you mean Lucy. I am constantly telling mum that she doesnt need to clean up after pup now!! Good mummies though!!

Now, interesting, thinking back, as I said, mum only got back to her normal happy self with and normal weight when pups were eight weeks old and I do not remember her regurgitating for the litter then and in the weeks prior to then. Maybe she didnt then because she needed the food herself and is making up for it now and the confusion of doing it and then sometimes not letting the pup have it now relates back to the fact that she didnt when she should have. Or maybe i am over complicating things lol I am so interested in doggy behaviour and tend to look too hard at things and read too much into them sometimes.

Up to a week ago I was in the same position. My pup is 11 weeks old now and mum was still regurgitating food but we havn't seen her do it for about a week now.  After feeding they would play a lot and this seemed to stimulate the action, we would whip the sick away quickly but she would also go out and do it in private.  I don't think they can help themselves it seems to be a involuntary action. like you we didn't want to separate them and just let it run its course, eventually mum was being sick and then eating it up herself and the puppy cold barely get a look in. Make sure you feed pup with mum so mum knows she is eating her own food.
