Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Day 60 late mating
- By Lara123 [gb] Date 17.10.12 16:31 UTC
Hi

My bitch was mated on day 16 and tied for about 10 mins we are now on day 60 she is digging outside and now digging and ripping up newspaper in her bed but I'm unsure if she actually has any puppies in there as I have felt her tummy and normally I can feel them moving around but I can't feel anything also her tummy is not big at all, does anyone have any advice that would be super?

Have you ruled out a singleton.

I'd probaly prepare for pups to arrive just in case.   Day 15/16 might not have been late for your girl, they don't all go early.

Have you a scanner nearby that could check for you.  They can dig a few days before as pups prepare to present themselves so don't leave her unless you're sure she's not carrying

Hth x

Would get your vet to take a look it is possible she is in whelp but it is also possible she has an infection and it is best to know which on the other hand it could be a phantom.

My bitch had 8 pups last week and if I hadnt been sitting for hours at a time with my hands on her I wouldnt have felt any movement!  Last time her litter was much more active and easy to spot and feel moving so I guess each dog/pregnancy is different.  I would be wary of letting her out in the garden on her own.

> mated on day 16

for most of mine that would be about right and for othrrs early, few of my bitches have been mated earlier than day 15, so much so unless behaviour indictates otherwise i don't even go to the stud dog now before day 15, as often they are day 18+.

Thank you all for your replys I've got a close eye on her because she is very clingy but still so active I know gentle lead walks are recommended but I live in the country with birds flying out everywhere and today she has been running like I don't know what I'll let you know what happens if nothing I will go to vet xx

Hi just an update no puppies arrived and my girl has been so down and hoarding toys and earlier growled at my child whilst in her dog bed will she snap out of this? Any advice welcome x

If she is snapping then she is getting close to whelping. Keep everyone away from her, but especially children, until she is ready to introduce pup(s) to the rest of her pack (you and our family). If she gets stressed she will a) attack anyone coming close b) attack and kill her pups or c) be ok with anyone around (not what I will expect though if she is growling and snapping now.)

Once pups are weaned and off to their new homes she should get back to normal.

It looks like the bitch wasn't pregnant as she was day 60 on 17th October and 29th would have made them over a week late??

Sounds like a phantom pregnancy.  She need her food cut, all toys and beds removed so she can't guard them, and lots of walks to snap her out of Mumsy mode.

I am assuming you have your dates right and she could not have been mated much later?
