My gsd has started chewing himself again, thought we had sorted things. This morning he is a very red area onhis elbow. Not red a true hot spot judt red and he is licking at it. I have trimed his fur as best I can an as it was the only thing I have around I bathed in salt water.
Any suggestions before we head to the vet again.I only have thronit otherwise or human creams  can get to chemist to buy hibiscrub/ savlon liquid
I am hoping if I can calm it down before it gets worse we can get it to heal

Probably Gentian Violet isn't something you would routinely have in at home, though maybe your chemist might stock it. But I now swear by it for hot spots and haven't needed to use Fuciderm since I discovered it. The trouble with using anything water-based  (Hibiscrub, Savlon liquid, diluted TCP etc) is that they add to the wet effect. Warm wetness provides a medium for the bacteria to proliferate so it's best to keep the area dry if you can. Gentian Violet is mostly alcohol based and dries much more quickly after disinfecting the area.

Not everyone willl agree I'm sure, but it works for us.

I think there was a study that suggested it was toxic to lab rats at certain doses. I've never found any problem with it and I know it was used routinely in the past.

The best ear drops I know are made by Quistel - they are like magic! They contain Gentian Violet. I expect there's some info on their site.

But each to their own. I keep a bottle of Gentian Violet in for my big boy who's prone to hot-spots and it sorts him out just fine.
