Dyson just packed up just out of 5 year guarantee, typical, with two aussies moulting what others opinions of a good hoover.

Hi peppe

I had an upright Dyson some years ago and found it OK, but VERY noisy.  I then had a Dyson cylinder model and absolutely hated it.  Again, I found it noisy and also cumbersome to carry around.  The attachments kept falling off and I don't think it did a particularly good job.  Some of that was my fault - I realised that I don't actually like cylinder type vacuums and have decided that I prefer using the upright kind - just personal choice I guess.

I now have a Sebo upright and I love it!  Very well designed, not too noisy and does a great job of tackling lots & lots of dog hair, hardwood floors and carpets - the height adjusts automatically for all surfaces.  I quite enjoy vacuuming now!  It is not bagless but the machine somehow compacts the dust down very tightly so the bags last for ages before they need changing.  I find it very robust but easy to carry around and although I've only had mine since January I gather they are supposed to last for years - we shall see.

I don't know what your personal preferences are, but Sebo might be worth a look when you are searching.  They are not cheap but they are very robust and, I think, worth every penny.  How infuriating your Dyson is just out of guarantee - isn't that always the way!

Currys and Argos where doing trade ins - you can trade any Hoover in and get money off a new dyson.  We took our old dyson in ( by old I mean it was one of the first ones that came out and it had been demoted to garage) we got great deal and got the one with the ball. I wouldn't have anything but a dyson now
We didn't get a big dyson so it doesn't hold much but it's great for whipping round and VERY light I just empty it every time instead of every so often. It copes easily with our goldie and 4 bed house with carpet, laminate and tiles. Oooooo and I forgot you can get spares very cheaply off Internet for dyson and they are the real thing

Locally we have several people who specialise in Dyson repairs so look around to see if you could get it fixed. I couldnt live without my Dyson. Nothing compares IMO

Over nearly 40 years have had just about every other make, nothing compares.  We're on our 2nd upright Dyson, wouldn't consider anything else.

Have recently bought a new Dyson Animal and it has proved even better than I hoped because the suction is so strong I can't manage it so it is my OH that has to clean the floor :-)

Fantastic nova if I had thought of that I would have had the biggest one lol

Our 9 year old Dyson packed up a couple of months ago (probably due to the plaster dust in our building site of a house). We got Dyson to come out. They completely serviced it, replaced the motor and filter and the baseplate (?) - all for £70. It is guaranteed for 12 months, so we reckon if it lasts for another 2 years we have had our moneys worth and then will buy another Dyson :) :) Only one Aussie here, plus a mongrel with a thick short coat :) :)

I have the insurance on my dyson usually wouldnt bother but this is great.. been out quite a few times over the years as I have a habit of running over the wire for one ;) been out these past few weeks new motor, spindle, brushes, wire>G< and general service cost me £5 per month and if he cant fix it I get a new one.... well worth it for us  esp with 3 beardies!!

Oh yes and the engineer has said more than once that the basic dyson's are the best he thinks personally that the animal is no better but more expensive.
- By Graciemay [gb] Date 23.10.12 20:19 UTC
We were told exactly the same starryeyes, we were told the basic ones have the best suction because all the extras they put on the others actually take suction away which when explained made perfect sense, our last dyson was a basic one and lasted us years even with long haired doggie and 3 children we only replaced it because of good deal and the old one was then demoted to garage as the one before had.

Will never ever have another Dyson, it was easily the worst cleaner I've ever tried despite being the most expensive -and I had the Animal one. Was even told the guarantee would not be valid if I had more than 3 pets. It didn't even last 6 months without breaking. I was recommended a Henry on here and that is the only brand I've ever tried that has not broken down. Cheap, reliable, does the job! With my amount of animals, that says quite a lot I think. :)

I too have a Sebo bought after much research into efficiency and reliability.

Also it can be taken apart and washed very easily which is a bonus.  Only drawback is the bag needs a helping of bicarb every so often to keep the smell in check. But I wouldn't go back to either a Dyson or a Vax.

Had a Dyson years ago when they first came out and it was very good. But once they stopped manufacturing them in the UK and took production abroad I decided I would never have another.

Ring dyson service they should be able to do a complete overhaul for under 100 if it includes motor around 40 if not motor
- By bestdogs Date 24.10.12 08:40 UTC
I would never have any other make! My Dyson is technically ten years old, but a couple of years ago I had the motor burn out and for £70 or so, the service engineer remade it! Most modern vacs the motors are sealed units and repair becomes uneconomical- I liken Dysons to Lego! With the service they offer, I can't see why I will  ever need to buy a new one.

A few years ago, when mine was out of warranty, I called them in to repair it and the service engineer put a couple of new parts on and said there was no charge. I queried why and he said that he could see it was well cared for and he had the authority to waive charges, if he thought it was justifiable!  A very canny company - result- one very satisfied customer to sing the praises of Dyson!

bestdogs are you in the northwest by any chance as the engineer who comes to me sings out of the same hymn book... I know they do cover a very large area.
- By bestdogs Date 24.10.12 20:39 UTC
No Starryeyes, I'm in the South West (Exmoor)   :)

I have had my Sebo for about 8 years and it is still fantastic, even with 5 resident very hairy dogs and one "lodger" over all that time. If and when it gives up the ghost, I shall certainly have another. Apart from my DC01 Dyson, the rest were rubbish.
- By Celtic Lad [gb] Date 27.10.12 07:04 UTC
Also have Dyson used everyday and still works perfectly after 5 years.Best machine we have ever had.
- By jackbox Date 27.10.12 20:44 UTC
Sebo here to,  had dysons before, but would not go back, the sebo is much superior .
- By peppe [gb] Date 28.10.12 09:37 UTC
Thanks for your comments decided to go with another dyson the new one is very similar in suction and dust capacity to my DC14. Got good offer from dyson down side having to wait 5 days for delivery and they use the worst company City Link so unrealiable.
