Does anyone know if there is any company offering insurance for dogs which takes account of the health tests available?   When one has gone to the trouble of finding a well-bred puppy from health tested parents, it seems strange that the insurance costs are the same as if one had bought a puppy-farmed product from the back of a car.  Has this ever been raised at KC or Breed Club level?  If the insurance companies were to take the health tests into account in lower premiums, it would seem a way of making the value of health tested parents clear to the "ordinary" puppy buyer. (Question arose because several people I know with recently-bought puppies, as well as myself, when getting insurance quotes were never asked anything about the health or health-test status of the pups' parents.)

Worth the kennel club approaching Pet Plan and their own Insurance.

I seem to remember that if you read the small print for Pet Plan it says that if the dog develops an illness that the parents should have been tested for, it won't be covered.

Is that generally speaking, Marianne?  I'm intrigued as Soli's parents weren't tested for anything, but she had hypothyroidism and died of DCM, both of which dobes are prone to (DCM especially) and both of which should be tested for.  But she was always covered for both.

I know I have read it in the past, at least as regards HD, but I've just been through the documents on their website and can't find it anymore. Maybe it's changed? It does make sense though, or, as the original poster suggested, have lower premiums for dogs from good breeders that have done everything so lowering the risk.

testing for HD doesn't take away the possibility of progeny suffering from HD unfortunately.... so not sure why insurance companies would pick that one... it may lesson the likelihood but it certainly doesn't exclude it... BUT if you don't test for TNS and a pup dies from it, I could understand them not covering it as it's completely preventable

My insurance company take into account of your health tested puppy. nfu mutual,i sent off eye examiation certificates and my premium went down....but then even if it didnt id stay cos theyre so cheap and so much fairer.

Another stupid thing is that on all my dogs' renewals they are classed as not spayed as that was their status when first insured at 8 weeks. They are all neutered now but no change to their insurance premiums as a result, even though I have told the companies.

They would not be because although some ill health is now impossible or unlikely other are more likely so why would they reduce the premiums, guess it is a case of roundabouts and swings.

not sure why premiums would be reduced... insurance doesn't cover breeding in most cases

Reply to all really (just not sure how to do it properly!)

Thank you to all who have commented.  I will share your insights with the other puppy owners. NFU Mutual sounds well worth looking into.

On my recent appointment at Dick White referrals they had a large notice telling owners that claims can be paid directly from the insurance company avoiding the necessity for owners to find large sums of money. This was for ALL insurance companies except NFU Mutual and one other.

This would concern me with NFU
