Topic Other Boards / Foo / Suit for showing -where to buy
- By Goldmali Date 16.10.12 10:47 UTC
I need to get my 17 year old daughter a suit for showing in, but I can't find anywhere that sells suits rather than separates -and I don't fancy spending ages picking trousers and jackets. Is there nowhere that sells complete suits? I had no problem finding my own, but I'm big so simply used online shops for bigger sizes, my daughter needs a black suit size 12. Not too wildly expensive either :) and we need it for her next show which is 4th of November. Any suggestions?

Charity shops.

I've bought suits for work in places like primark matalan and next. they are very reasonable and wash well. often sold as seperate (but on the same rail rogether so easy to match up) but you can get a matching trouser/jacket/waistcoat combo and buy seperate shirts of your colour choice.

I bought mine from M&S

Try Ebay, have bought quite a few suits from there over the years, they're usually like new!  But a lot cheaper!

When I was junior handling (sadly quite a long while ago) I bought some great, really comfortable suits from m&s, not sure how good they are now. I bought my most recent suit from an m&s outlet store at a shopping centre. Maybe try one of those, like Bicester village, there is another good one I went to in Essex.

Make sure though that if the jacket or trousers has stitched up pockets that they are in fact unstitchable pockets! I've made that mistake before when buying a suit, v annoying for showing!

I've also bought one or two handy showing jackets from charity shops. I personally dont buy clothes off eBay unless I've already seen the item of clothing in store and tried it on. I then search online for it later! Many eBay stores won't do returns if your daughter doesn't like it and we all know how different brand sizes vary so much. HTH

Next and M&S but can be pricey but have bought from there when sale on! I  have got quite a few bargains off ebay and also a few charity shop bargains too!  but now Jess does tend to now go for jacket and trouser mixes - has three pairs of trousers and three jackets which she now mixes up - her favorite jacket though a tweed type she grew out of :(

I avoid buying too expensive as its going to get 'slobbery (setters!) and hairy!' and also muddy (thanks Ardingly indoor riding school ;)) - Tesco and Asda maybe?

Hope you find something!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!! I now have something to look at, the websites of the shops for a start. Our closest town is very small so does not have a Next, Matalan, Primark, M&S or similar, so I'd never even thought of them, but most have websites and they exist in the next bigger town to us so if needs be a trip out. :)  Rachel -indeed, don't want it to be too expensive because of dog hairs and slobber etc!! Otherwise I wouldn't mind too much, hopefully she won't grow much more now.

one more tip - make sure machine washable!!!!  One jacket Jess has isn't and its pale pink!  - although I have machine washed it and thankfully it survived!

I second the machine washable part althou have found ace bleach is excellent at getting Boxer slobber marks out
of clothes :)

Can vouch for primarni and matalan stuff - I wear both for work, they wash well need no ironing and dry quickly.  And the dog hair does not stick too much!

Debenhams, House of Fraser - any of the deprtment stores are good.. H&M is worth a look.
I tend to buy from Next online if i'm honest as can pay it in instalments if it works out expensive..

I got a fantastic one from a charity shop not long ago.  I would say looking at it it would cost around £100, i paid £3!  It does say dry clean only but I chuck it in the wash and it comes up lovely!  I've been wondering where to go though as I'm judging in December and want a new nice smart suit but am against paying M&S prices as I find much of their stock extremely overpriced and not that good.

What about TK Maxx?

there are some really smart trouser and skirt suits in matalan at the moment.

I've had some really nice looking suits from Matalan that don't break the bank and look really smart for work..

And I'm a grubby sod, so machine washable is a must.

I've never been disappointed, and people assume they cost far more when they see them.

Principles as well, I've bought some nice ones from there.  Debenhams maybe, although I hate looking round there now its too disjointed to find and compare things

Been conferring with daughter and we've found a nice, cheap and machine washable suit at Matalan. Thank you everyone! :)
