Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / How soon to scan

Its been 8 years since my last litter & I think I had the bitch scanned but cant remember.

How early can a bitch be scanned, I dont necessarily need to know how many, although it may help. It wouldnt be until possibly wednesday, which would be day 32 of first mating or day 30 of second mating.

Just after a little reassurance of what I think is correct.

I usually have mine scanned at day 28 ... vet prefers them that time and pups can clearly be seen, although he has also scanned at day 21 which also showed pups.

My vets prefer after 30 days.

My lady says over day 28.

thanks both :) ...we rarely scan, I think this is only the 2nd or maybe 3rd time but then its only the 11th litter in 47 years!

I leave it till 38/39 days to check there is a viable pregnancy before starting the daily worming and puppy food at 40/42 days.

I've just been told 5 weeks from the second mating, and so has a friend (different scanner). We were both told to leave it that long to cut down the risk of reabsorption. Must say, I usually go at about 30 days.

It depends on the expertise of the operator.  Pups can be picked up easily at 28 days and with skill at 21 days.

Thank you every one, you have all answered more or less what I expected...I now have my answer & will book her in for mid to end of next week.

by that time I can be pretty certain just by looking at my girls.

Me too.  Made me think not experienced scanner operators........ :(

The way to do that is to use a sound rather than picture scanner - they use 1/10th of the ultrasound rays - so I was told by a man who manufacturers both.

Yes, I have to say I thought the very same...

Me too, it was very obvious by then. But it was still good just to confirm it, in my view. And I got a good look at the monitor and saw how many. Everyone in the carpark assured me how good and accurate this (exteremely experienced) scanner is. So we'll see!
