If I were to go to my friendly butcher and ask for a bone for my puppy what is the best top ask for, somewhere I read shinbone or something! but as he is but 15 weeks old I was not sure what is safe for him to have

I always find fresh bones go smelly and if they have marrow in them upsets the tums, I always get the smoked bones from the pet shops

Hudson prefers them to get smelly and generally manky :D

I deal with this problem by roasting them in the oven, they will then last indefinately without going smelly (well for as long as they are not chewed down too small). I put the marrow bones in a roasting trray for 45 minutes on Gas Mark 9.

They do not go brittle like the commercial roast bones!

I regularly feed fresh bones from the butcher to my 3 boys with no ill effects.The bone you feed would somewhat depend on the size of the dog-what breed is he?what is suitable for a great dane wouldn't be for a yorkie for example.

Mine is a 15 week old Old English sheepdog weighing about 38 pounds at last check! He still has baby teeth and I wondered if he would be able to manage a big bone! mind you he does OK on my shoes!

We feed our new puppy bones to fresh we find to be the best as you don't know what they do to the bones before you bu them do you? I wouldn't buy pork bones though as i always find that makes them sick we in cavaliers anyway, i'd say cow, sheep and would you belive it but the bones off deer, you can't buy them anywhere we go to one in the new forest!

I will also try my local butcher as he is south african and has all kinds of unusual meats there and is usually very well priced!

Ask your butcher if he does "boarvorst" sausages (bad spelling but say it how it's written!!).

They're very, very meaty and my spaniel loves them :D

About 5 years ago a friend of mine gave her dog pork bones and a week latter the dog died. The xrays showed all the splinters of bone inside him. Bless. Just thought I would share, not that you would give them pork bones. Shirl :D

I think that you do have to be a bit careful with pork and lamb bones even if they are raw. I stick to beef bones which seem to be pretty soft maybe it's because they are bigger bones with more marrowbone? Also it depends on the age of the animal when it was slaughtered, if they were nice young cattle then the bones will be more soft and less of a risk?
