Topic Dog Boards / Health / Poorly pup after worming?
- By Ruby Roo [gb] Date 07.10.12 20:06 UTC
Hi all,

I have wormed the pup last night (5 months) with drontal, same as before ie weighed first, half tablet with a smidge of pâté .... she was all ok this morning ie the usual happy to see me etc but didn't eat all her breakfast.  Around 12 we just went into the garden for a wee, all ok apart from she became a bit shaky as if she was cold so we came in and snuggled up, infact as I'm suffering with "man-flu" at the moment we decided to get in bed where we both fell asleep til about 3pm!!   She didn't touch lunch either but as normal I took her out for our usual 10-minute walk for the afternoon poo (sorry...tmi?), this was a little on the soft side than normal and she really wasn't interested in walking like she normally is, and again started shaking like she was cold.   She hasn't eaten any tea, wasn't excited at seeing the kids come home and is still curled up on my lap sleeping, other than being taken out for a wee hasn't moved much at all ie her usual inquisitive naughty puppy self.   She seems alert when awake just not interested in her toys etc like normal, is drinking water if I tempt her, can't see or feel anything that could be causing her pain (no baby teeth have fallen out yet tho'!).  Could this just be from the worming dose?  I don't think she had worms, don't check every day but certainly haven't seen anything to suggest she had and is being wormed monthly til the six months.
Thanks

There are some flus which can be transmitted from humans to dogs, actually - I was just reading about that yesterday.  So perhaps she has your man-flu...

I've sometimes seen runny poos and tummy upsets after worming, but not shaking or temperature/cold issues - and if she was fine last time you wormed her with Drontal, I don't think it would be that.

Yes, it is possible, I had a dog that had a violent allergic reaction to Dontrol and suggest you use something different next time.

well breakfast has been eaten, everything in the garden back to normal and she has discovered when the kids are eating breakfast she can get herself onto daughters chair and then onto the dining room table to see whats going on .... normality resumed I guess and no drontal next time!

no drontal next time!

Wise decision, the effect of substances that a body is allergic too increase every time it is subject to them, so next time try Panacure.

One of my dogs was sick after Drontal not having had a bad effect before so thought it was something she ate, second time it happened I changed her wormer and then another of the dogs has been sick too - never a lot but sick nevertheless. I am changing those to another wormer and the rest when I run out of Drontal

I'll just see if the local rescue dogs home wants what I have left of the Drontal tablets as they are in date and start again with the panacure.  She is deftinately back to herself and making up for lost time by being extra naughty this evening!!
