Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Day 63 or earlier?

Hi everyone

I have a pregnant bitch, toy breed. She is on day 57 today but kept me up all night digging around in her whelping box. She is showing no other signs of labour, her temperature is normal, no panting, shivering etc. This morning shes back to normal, shes eaten breakfast, gone out to do the toilet - no diarrhea. Does this sound like she is likely to go into labour earlier than day 63?

Thanks

Hi Gemz, I know there is a few toy breeders on here who will no doubt be along with advice soon.  I dont think it is uncommon though for toys to whelp at this stage.  The last litter my girl had she would have spells of digging and panting in her box (only through the night!) for about 4-5 days before she finally had them on day 60.  I think more bitches whelp a day or 2 earlier than go over.
Keeping evrything crossed for you.

What's normal for your breed? I've never had any of my toys go 63 days (and not often with my larger breed either), I'd expect pups around day 57 to 58 normally. Many small toys are almost always a week early.

Same as goldmali, my toy breed always go early.  Day 56 is very popular!  And pups are fully formed, and do just fine.  With toy breeds it is important to recognise uterine inertia, and not leave them too long as it is potentially life threatening.
