On Wednesday our girl gave birth to a still born puppy and then went on to have a ceasarian and had a second live puppy

I am now in the position of gathering as much information regarding rearing singleton pups so asking for help and experiences here

So far

This puppy is very mobile and gaining weight at the same rate as my previous litters did so must be feeding well, he is also very vocal and certainly lets you knwo if he isn't happy with something (usually when she is cleaning him but I ma monitoring that so she doesn't over clean)
Mum is anxious but I think that may also be related to the trauma of the birth as much as anything
Mum noses the boy around making him work to get to her nipples, rucks up vet bed for him to clamber over and pushes him all around the bed she has made for him, which is not in the whelping box but she will not go back in there at the moment so we aren't adding to her stress by making her - that can be in a few days when she is less worried
It looks as if her milk is  now only coming in her rear nipples so fingers crossed there won't be a problem with mastitis

I am not sure how much to feed her - whether it should remain at the level she would get if she weren't feeding or just to increase that by a small amount with things like some chicken and cheese

As he grows older I will add toys to his play area and things he has to climb over, under etc to increase his mobility and IF I can find a suitable similar aged litter I will see if I can arrange for some play time for him

Anything else?

Sorry that one pup didn't make it. He sounds like a battler and will soon get used to Mum being overly attentive.

You need to feed Mum more than her normal amount as she still has to produce milk for one pup for 4+ weeks and she needs to to keep herself in peak condition, how much extra will depend on how she is looking.

You will need to make sure there is a heat pad for the pup to keeep warm if Mum isn't there and a soft toy for him to cuddle up with.

i put sterilised toys in with mum and baby for her to snuggle up to.  She did like lieing with them and it offered comfort.  I didn't have a problem with mum's appitite, she ate like a trouper and baby fed for over 9 weeks.

I understand about loudness, she's very vocal and high pitched playing even now :)   I found mum more protective when it came to socialising pup with my others for experience.  If no other dogs about, you will have to play with him.  Do things like tug and see if they will chase your hand.  Hope that helps.  I found it a joy watching a sigleton grow and develop.
