Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Question re worming in pregnancy and weights?
- By Alfieshmalfie Date 29.09.12 21:08 UTC
My girl missed earlier this year and at the time I posted a question about which wormer to use. I don't really like Panacur and have always used Drontal plus on all my dogs. However she wasnt pregnant so I didnt need to look into it in any more detail.  This time around she is definitely pregnant as when scanned again they were all there with their little heart beats :)  She is currently 35 days past first mating so will need to start sorting out worming now.  I have a few questions.

Even though I don't really like Panacur, it is the only one licensed in pregnancy and as far as I can make out, the only one that deals with encysted worms. Have I got this right?

My girl weighed 21kg before pregnancy, do I worm her on this weight, or on the weight she is when I dose her?  As if I worm her with Panacur its a daily dose for 25 days, her weight is going to increase rapidly over that time.

The dosing instructions say that for 1ml for each 4kg of body weight, so for 20kg it would be 5ml, how on earth would I measure out 5.25ml?  I really dont want to overdose her.

What do you recommend as a worming regime for when the pups are born? Do you worm Mum at the same time, as surely if she is still clearing up after them then she would get two doses of wormer?

My mentor has had a family crisis and has backed out so Im on my own for this one :(

You worm them based on pre pregnancy weight.  I would just go with a 5 ml syringe but if you really want to be exact then ask your chemist for a 1ml syringe for the 0.25.  My vet always mentains that panacur is one of the safest wormers and even if you accidently give too much it shouldnt cause any major problems.
I also wormed my girl at the same time as the pups but I cant remember what the dosage was.  good luck xx

I have always used Panacur 10% for my toy breeds, and wouldn't use anything else.  I have always weighed them at the date of first worming, and only found out this year that others take the pre-pregnancy weight (the box doesn't actually specify.)

However, as it has been tested to many, many times the recommended dose rate, I still consider it the safest and most successful wormer.  I have never seen a worm in all my years of using Panacur.

As my pups often only need 0.02ml at 14 days, I use the 1ml syringes from hyperdrug.  I use the 5ml ones for adults, and have always found it easy to be accurate about dosing.

Pregnant bitch dose is a quarter of the normal adult dose rate.  However, when pups are wormed at 14 days, they get dosed for 3 days.  Mum gets the normal adult dose (1ml per 1kg), and for one day only.

I won't use Panacur so worm at time of mating but NOT during pregnancy, but instead at same times for mother as for the pups, with Drontal. Never had a problem.

I use Panacur 10% too, I base the dose on pre pregnancy weight which is under 4Kg so they get 1ml per day.

I posted the same dilemma on here about 9 weeks ago.  I always use drontal wormer and vet recommended I used is whilst my girl was pregnant, it states on the box that is is safe for use during pregnancy.  However, I decided in the end to go with Panacur 10% as it did seem the most widely used wormer amongst breeders.  I didn't actually start using it until about day 43, I weighed her then and stuck with that dose every day.

I had no problems with her and she had 6 very healthy puppies.  I then went back to Drontal puppy for the pups, I wormed at 2,  4 and 6 weeks.

Good luck.

I've used the Panacur 10% on all our pregnant bitches for years and always been happy with it, that is until this particular litter we have at the moment.

Mum was wormed from day 43 with the liquid until the birth as usual and puppies then wormed at 14 days old using the Panacur paste.Which again is a product I've been using for years and never had a problem with.  Nothing unusual to report until at 4 weeks one puppy didn't put on as much weight as expected, so wormed again and this time adult worms could clearly be seen in the poo. Wormed them for the 3 days as recommended ( Mon/ Tues/ Wed) and today (Sunday)there are still worms visible in the poo.

Not sure if I got a rogue batch of wormer or what, I got it from my usual supplier, a UK based company I've been using for years, but I'm not happy.

I'd certainly be checking expiry dates (they re usually about 3 years) and batch and get it looked at.  I have never ever seen worms in all the years I have been using it.  Unlike when I went to help worm a rescue litter a friend was fostering, yuk.

They were so bad they were sicking them up pooing them out and were so anaemic the vet said to stop the worming after two days and give it another 10 days before dosing again, as pups were in danger of not surviving treatment!

These were 5 - 6 week old pups who had never been wormed, nor had the mother.

That's what I'm wondering, as, like you, I've used it for donkeys years.  I think Barbara is right.  You have nothing to lose by putting in a complaint, explaining that it's never happened before.
