Does anyone have a tried and tested recipe for a dog biccie/treat which does not contain either wheat or maize? HAve promised to make some for a young pug who seems to be both wheat and maize intolerant. My recipes all call for either flour or cornmeal/polenta, so not suited. HAve found some mention online about using rice or potato flour instead, but wondered if anyone had something they had made with success?

You can just substitute rice flour for ordinary flour, same quantity. I've done that with my liver cake and it works fine. That would be 500g liver mixed with 2 beaten eggs, then stir in 500g rice flour. Bake in a baking tray at 180 for about 20 minutes.
I've also used a couple of biggish boiled sweet potatoes mashed up with a tin of pilchards and some sunflower oil (about 1/4 cup). If it still looks too soft you can add some rice flour or oatmeal. Bake that in a baking tray at 180 for about 20 minutes or so.
Good luck! Tell your friend she can improvise too. I often use what's in the cupboard and my dogs don't complain :-)

Hi Gwen,
Another vote for Esme's suggestion here, I also use rice flour in my liver cakes etc HTH?
I also make liver cake, but I use ground rice, and add parsley,a garlic clove and some oil.Oh,and 3 eggs as I find it sets better.Im supplying half my dog class with it at the mo!

Fantastic, wonderful tips everyone, will now get baking!
another thing you can do is cook liver then slice it into small cubes, spread on a baking tray and cook in a very low oven. Stir them around a bit every now and again. They dry out and make a nice treat that is not messy and dogs love.

hi i make my liver cakes with bran either allbran or branflakes.its also great for gland trouble

I make liver flapjacks using porridge oats, eggs to bind, spred mixture on a baking tray, bake and then cut into slices.
Thats a good idea,as ground rice is getting harder to find!Morrisons say they discontinued it due to poor sales.Tesco and asda still do,but for how long,i wonder?.

Semolina or Corn meal would work well and keep it together well without the need of eggs I should think. I have used semolina in meatballs when I haven't had bread.

You can still get it in Sainsburys. I got some quite recently in the co-op too.
I did wonder about semolina,as it seems about the same texture as the ground rice, but never got round to trying it.I wonder if ordinary plain, white or wholemeal flour would work,at least you can always get hold of that!
Im glad to hear the co op and sainsburys sell ground rice too, thankyou! I bet you could find it in asian supermarkets too,I might have to travel a bit,but I would if I had to!Ive just made a ton to sell at a charity agility event my friend set up,and I couldve sold it twice over-I just hope people didnt go overboard feeding it,or there could be a few dodgy tums,if theyre not used to liver!!

We've got a Dehydrating machine from Amazon for £40 you can dry fruit, veg and meat in it(not at the same time),for the dogs Ive made different types of Jerky for them, you just slice any lean meat eg steak, venison, chicken and turkey just spray with a little oil and place in the dryer when it's done place in a air tight container,at least you know that there aren't any additives in it.

Same here! Have had fun drying apples, pears, bananas etc for us humans. Haven't tried drying out meats yet but will do it now and add to my repertoire of home-made dog treats.
Do you know, I can't imagine how I ever had time to go to work!
