Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / How long do dog sperm need a time to fertilize?
- By shaggydog [ph] Date 30.09.12 03:26 UTC
Hi guys

My quick question is how long a time do dog sperm use to swim to the eggs? Does it take a day? Several hours?
So upon deposition to the female through mating, is it immediate as fertilization during the same day, assuming eggs are sperm friendly upon mating?

If everything is ideal then within hours of mating. Not sure how long it takes for a sperm to penetrate an egg once it has found a ripe one.

Here is a Canine Pregnancy Calendar to help plot the process

Those two sites seem to say very different things in respect to timings.  I must admit the Debbie Jensen worried me in that if you mate 2 days after ovulation (as recommended by IDDEX), it sounds like it still takes a few more days for the sperm to reach the egg, by which time it would surely be too late, and the eggs would have deteriorated?...

If eggs ready for fertilisation the dog will conceive on day of mating. to time estimated delivery date using IDEXX or progesterone testing use 64 days from initial rise in progesterone ie 2-4 ng /l .
May go max two days longer but if in doubt use progesterone again to establish if labours should have started. Readings of 2ng at due date the bitch should labour in next 24 hrs, if lower should be already be in labour. very useful to determine need for C section.

Ovulation is the release of eggs and it takes a while for them to reach a position where they could be fertilised (about 48 hours). One of the reasons that bitches miss is because they are mated too early and the sperm are no longer viable when the eggs reach a position where this would be possible.
