Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Update on Sonny

Hello everyone,

I received a telephone call last night from the parents of one of our boarders. They have friends that have two grown Goldens, saw Sonny a few weeks ago....heard what had happened to Sonny and said that they would take him!
I had explained the nature of the problem and they were fully aware of what Sonny had done but they contacted Blue Cross and the reception centre and are going up there today to fill in the papers:) I'm smiling because it may be a good chance for Sonny and I know that he will be 'kept in order' by the older dogs. He still has to be assessed and I know that he hasn't had the 'all clear' yet but it looks hopeful for him.
I know that lots of folks may disagree but I'm glad we gave him the chance. This couple have no children and will never have so that's one less worry.
I'm still reading CD because we will be getting another dog and I've SO MUCH to learn:)

Ruth,

I think you did the right thing in giving him a chance. I agree that he should never be rehomed with children as he would be unpredictable. As this couple are fully aware of his history and want to give him one more chance then good on them.

Im glad you have decided to get another dog at some point. Let us all know what you decide to get.

Laura :-)

Well it is nice he is going to a home that has no children and to owners that are experienced in the breed. I presume they will have the initiative not to loose him off in a park where unsuspecting children may be playing and to warn children not to stroke him as given his unpredictable nature it would be best safe than sorry.
Don't want to sound a nag but none of us would wish harm to our children or other children.
I really do hope everything goes OK.

If the new family know his historyand are willing to undertake all the responsibility that that entails, this could be a happy ending for all concerned, i do hope so. Maybe they will consider muzzling him when they take hin out, in case.

If poor Sonny has a bad problem then I am sure it will show itself to be insurmountable and then they will do what has to be done, but I wish them luck and will keep fingers crossed :-)

have you had any feedback on Sunny :)

Hi Lel,

No feedback on Sonny yet but I hope to find out later.
On a happier note, we took the boys to see a black lab and her puupies (6 weeks) today. The mum was lovely with Ben, wanted to lick his face etc and he didn't seem frightened at all. The mum also has an excellent pedigree, hip score of 17, elbows 0 and eyes checked and clear. She was brilliant as was the father's pedigree.
The breeder quizzed us about garden, being at home, etc and really wanted to know about us. We have booked one for when they're ready and will go back next week probablly to see them again.
It does seem soon after the episode with Sonny but I can't begin to explain the gap that Sonny has left in our lives. He taught us, as I've said before, just how much love a dog can give and we can give to the dog.
So, I'm afraid I'll still be writing in to CD's for tips and advice:)
At least we've gone along the right road this time.

A happier Ruth :)

That's wonderful news Ruth - children do bounce back very quickly and it sounds as if Ben has got a new friend there :)

Good luck with the pup,

Fiona

That litter (and breeder!) sound excellent! I'm so glad your little boy isn't scared, as that can restrict someone's life terribly.

Good luck to you and the new pup - keep us up-to-date with how things go. :)

Hope everything goes ok :-)

You must keep us informed of your new pup - is it a bitch or a dog?

:-)

Hi Everyone,

The pup we went to see is a dog. I had thought of getting a bitch as my understanding was that they are less aggresive but having talked to the LRC and various people, it seems that there's not much of a difference. It would be good to read what others think.

Take care

Hi Ruth,

I have both dogs and bitches, and can honestly say my boys are just as soppy as the girls :). The boys tend to be slightly more reserved with other (male) dogs, but that is the nature of the beast!

Friends have a male black lab, and he's a complete softy!
