Hi,
Are you certain you weren't looking at a photo of a komondor? They look exactly like a Puli with their dreadlocks, except for being white instead of black.
regards,
toodles

Hi Guest ..I *think* (and I do stress it is only something that I remember from AGES ago) that if you let a poodles coat grow out it does become corded ..has anyone else heard this or is it a case of me misremembering?

Melody :)

I've seen pictures of corded poodles too - they were very popular in the early 20th century. As I understand it, you have to twist and oil the coat to put the cords in, as with a Puli. Someone on another site was writing about this a year or so ago - Pedigree Dogs I think it was.

Yes you can cord a poodles coat but it has to be the dense harsh variety of coat. If I remember reightly the one int he dog annuals was an australian one. I attempted to do my mini poodle's coat but it takes a lot more time to establish so gave up. I'm going to try it again once she has her full adult coat and I have more time to cord her.

Thanks Bec ...is this similar to the result you get with Rastafarian dreads?

It does take quite a while for their coats to cord, around about 2 years. Unfortunately they can't be shown in England with a corded coat. There are not many clips that are accepted in the show ring either.

I have 4 Spanish Water Dogs and I'm only allowing two of them to have longer coats, it just takes too much time to cope with. Once it's corded though it's easy.

Corded poodles can and have been shown in this country. There is nothing in the breed standard to say that they cannot. The lion trim is just that a trim. It does not state that the hair should be brushed out. The 'mane' can be corded as can the tail and poms and rosettes. I'm not saying you'll get anywhere but you can show them! Below is a link to an AKC poodle in cords, picture is right at the bottom! Corded Poodle

Hi Guest,

I don't think it is disallowed to show a corded poodle but I don't think you will get very far.:(

I have just looked at the Kennel Club's breed standard for Standard Poodles which says:
"Coat
Very profuse and dense; of good harsh texture. All short hair close, thick and curly. It is strongly recommended that the traditional lion clip be adhered to."

By that I interpret it to preferring the lion clip, but other clips can be used, including the corded look. However, as the lion clip is strongly recommended, don't expect anything if you go that way. Personally, I think it is the dog that should be judged, and not the look/cut of the overcoat it is wearing ;) However, it would be great fun to enter an exemption show with a corded poodle, just to see the reaction! :p

Any clip can go but the dogs won't get anywhere. I knew someone with a lovely puppy but people didn't take too well to her not having the proper clip for showing!! So glad that my breed are either clipped all off or are shown with coats inbetween being corded.

Not that I've got anything against poodles though, a really nice one does look wonderful in the show ring.

A Corded Poodle is just a poodle without (IMHO) silly haircuts, I have one! Its just a case of letting their coat grow naturally, with some assisance to stop it matting, they are not recognised by the KC any longer, tho the AKC still accept them. Hope this helps!
