Help!

My dogs usually bark for a minute or so when someone comes to the door but Sid just barks and barks and circles them the whole time they're here. I've tried putting him in another room but he will still bark non stop. I've also tried a safety gate which he has jumped. It's got so bad that I never invite anyone to the house.

As we are having some building work done over the next few weeks and workmen are going to be here I contacted a behaviourist. She came around and was very blunt. She said it was completely my fault as instead of ignoring his barking I tried to make him stop so I was giving him attention for barking. She told me to turn my back on him and ignore him until he was quiet then I should give him a treat. He was still barking bis head off when she left.

So Friday morning the builders arrived and I was armed with treats. Well he just barked at them all day. I ignored him went in another room but he didn't care. The odd time he did stop for breath I called him and gave him a treat and he just ran back and started barking again. I thought he might better when they came back yesterday morning but he was just as bad. As you can imagine the builders had had enough of him so I had to put him in the conservatory where he continued to bark.

I'm dreading them coming back on Monday! Can anyone offer advice on how to train me or Sid? (He's. Cairn Terrier)

Thanks

At this point it might just be best to manage it.

Put him in a crate cover it with a blanket, and put him in a room furthest from the action with the Radio or TV on fairly loud (either to drown out his barking, or reduce what he hears).

agree with brainless. My pomx cross although not quite as bad is alittle devil for barking I have tried tarining but probably my fault and inconsistany but havnt got far except she will come in and stop barking for treat then go out and start again or stop when I appear. I am now trying to manage it ie reduce time in garden if she barks and restrict her time in rooms with windows she can see out of . Mind sounds also start her off and with three dogs it can be very noisy.
