Can anyone tell me if it will harm 17 week old lab pup if I combine beta puppy dried with tinned winalot puppy in two meals?
Also how would you work out the quantities? Pups current weight is 13.5 kilos. Still got soft stools though not everytime - not as mucssy, I have now decided that I think it is because he is teething - lost two teeth from top and two from bottom (babies sometimes cut teeth with loose nappies). He is as bright as a button, coat good condition.

Thanks
Russ

At the risk of being sued here...I have to tell you Russ that I have had a disasterous time with beta puppy recently :( I have always reared pups and whole litters on it....for about 15 years without problems. My current litter went onto it at weaning & I had diahroea puppies for 3 weeks. First I thought it was the milk so removed it from their diet. Then gave them all antibiotics in case they had a bug, then tried less water (on vets suggestion!) all to no avail. Eventually changed over to James Wellbeloved (no change over period, just went straight on to it) and within 24 hours all their stools were perfect. Furthermore they reduced their water intake by half (BP made them v.v. thirsty) and reduced the volume of poos by half. I will never use BP again.

To Sam

Thanks for that. Pup has been on beta since 6 weeks old first mixed with water then as it comes out of packet. At first he was fine then he became soft stools with mucus not over pooing vet could not find anything wrong still no sure about changing food. Poss try puppy tin mixed with beta but unsure. May try the one you suggested can you get it from Pets at Home??
Thanks

Yes I had the same experience when I fed my litter on that, without getting too graphic, sticky tar was how I would describe it. I also changed over to James Wellbeloved and they were fine. Thinking back I mixed in a bit of chappie aswell with the James Wellbeloved. The best results I have had with dried food is Pro-Plan which is what I am feeding my 12 week old puppy on at the moment.

Yes, you can get the James Wellbeloved at Pets at Home, but not sure about Pro Plan. I'm sure you can though, they have lots to choose from there. Shirl :D

Where can you purchase these products??

Thanks

Hi Russ, I used to ask my local pet shop to order it in for me, any shop that sells pet food will be able to get it for you. I think I have seen it in Pets at Home

What does anyone else think about mixing beta puppy dried and winalot tin puppy??? anyone suggest quantities might use (i.e. 400g tin of tin and 200g dried) does that sound reasonable????
Please respond as dog needs feeding.

Thanks

I wouldn't mix like this as it could be too rich and balance might be off, but that's just MHO

to anne

Would you mix at all??? if so how would you mix it according to tins he should have 4.25 tins per day and according to beta puppy dried he should have 445 - 680 g per day.
- By westie lover [gb] Date 26.01.03 11:23 UTC
I too would never feed Beta puppy again. My favourite puppy complete food is Arden Grange puppy and would recommend it for every puppy, except perhaps giant breeds who may need lower protein. I mix a little Butchers Tripe (10%)with it to get their nose in. I wouldn't worry too much about the amounts on the packet, just watch the pups condition and feed the amount that keeps him in the right condition. The amounts stated are only guide lines and all pups are different.

where can you get arden grange from??
- By Cava14Una Date 26.01.03 12:46 UTC
No Russ not complete and tinned, as they are not designed to be fed like that as far as I know. I would feed complete or tinned and mixer, I actually feed raw but that's my decision, used to feed complete and never mixed tinned with it

I don't know about sticky tar - I described it as melted chocolate!

Its not that bad just mucussy but think that my be down to teething. What do you think about mixing beta puppy and tin winalot puppy (these are made by same company friskies).
- By russ [gb] Date 26.01.03 15:19 UTC
Has no one any suggestions at all about beta puppy dried and winalot puppy tinned mixed together in one meal???????
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 26.01.03 15:25 UTC
I never had any problems with Beta puppy dried, but others have, so I guess it depends on the individual dog. However I do find that almost all tinned food goes through them like the proverbial "dose of salts", so personally I'd give it a miss!
- By russ [gb] Date 26.01.03 15:30 UTC
Thanks Jeangine

anyone else out there with suggestions????
- By Val [gb] Date 26.01.03 15:39 UTC
Russ beta puppy is a complete and balanced food on its own. If you mix tinned meat with it, other than a teaspoonful made into gravy to make it more tasty, then you'll unbalance the balance!

Val

Thanks I know that but he has soft stools with mucus in on beta looking for suggestions how to get them more solid and no mucus (as above think may be his teeth) but not sure. Dont think I am over feeding him because if he is not hungry he wont eat it.
- By Val [gb] Date 26.01.03 15:45 UTC
Not sure about that Russ. Most labs I know are vacuum cleaners (sorry John) and would eat until they burst! I would definitely reduce the amount. The guide on the bags are always more than required. If you soak it, try feeding it dry.
- By russ [gb] Date 26.01.03 15:53 UTC
Val

I give it dry, he had it soak when we got him at six weeks about 8-9 week old he would not touch it soaked. He is not a greedy dog or a hoover if he does not want it he wont eat it he does not eat for eating sake.
Do you think feeding him less and feeding him morning and night may do the trick. How do you calculate what less???
- By steve [gb] Date 26.01.03 16:25 UTC
Hi russ
we used to feed beta puppy to ours when he was little
why are you so adamant about the winalot tinned food ??--I'm not being argumentative ,but you seem keen to keep that in the pups diet ( i know that sounds sharp but its not meant to be :) )
Will he eat the beta on its own?
liz
- By russ [gb] Date 26.01.03 16:34 UTC
Yes he will eat it on its own, just want to make sure that am looking after him right! NOT NORMAL TO HAVE SOFT STOOLS WITH MUCUS ON DRIED FOOD. VET SAID NOTHING WRONG THOUGH!
- By steve [gb] Date 26.01.03 16:43 UTC
no I know its not normal so i was just wondering why you were so keen to feed a tinned food aswell -thats all
I believe Chappie is good for settling tums down but just a small amount if your feeding a complete food aswell
or a small amount of plain natural yoghurt mixed in can help with the bacteria in the gut
liz :)
I am trying to be helpfull --things often read harsher than they are meant :)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 26.01.03 16:50 UTC
I agree Chappie is the only tinned food I ever give mine, and that's not often. I like to keep their insides used to different things, so that I'm not stuck if I can't get their usual food!

Live yoghurt is great for helping settle bowels, especially after a course of antibiotics.
- By Lily Munster [gb] Date 26.01.03 16:53 UTC
I would get your pup off the Beta puppy, it may well have wheat in it and that may be causing the bowel to become irritable, hence the soft motions. Likewise it means your pup will not be getting the best nutritional benefits from the food it's eating.

I found Burgess Supadog pup pretty good and it's cereal base is rice instead of wheat, a bit kinder to the digestive system, this can be bought from Pets at Home. Try a little Chum puppy food through it, or a little bit of minced raw (thawed) tripe (Another tip is to put the food in a non-metallic dish with some trip and blast it in the microwave for 30 secs to release the "lovely" aroma of the tripe).

Other puppy foods I recommend are Nutro ("Large breed pup" if you have a Lab) or Royal Canin-Maxi Junior.
- By russ [gb] Date 26.01.03 18:24 UTC
I know youre trying to be helpful. I dont know what else someone gave me some pedigree puppy complete to add to the beta to try that but he just ate the beta and left the pedigree. Will try some yoghurt added to the beta how much?? how many time per day would you suggest feeding pup 17 weeks now, he is not a hoover so if not hungry doesnt eat food should I just go with what pup wants??
Thanks for your advice
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 26.01.03 18:29 UTC
At 17 weeks I would say he should, in theory, be on three meals a day until 24 weeks, but if he doesn't show a lot of interest in one of them (probably his lunch) make that a bit smaller and put the extra into his breakfast and dinner.

Re the yoghurt, a tablespoonful on his meal would be fine. Mine love it!

Hope this helps.
- By steve [gb] Date 26.01.03 18:58 UTC
hi Russ
if hes not a hoover then just go by 'eye'
maybe drop the lunchtime as above ( sorry didn't look at the name before i started to post ;) )
and see how he goes .
Personally I don't like the winalot tinned stuff but thats just me ( well the dog ,not me :D )
if he's been to the vets and hes ok and the funny poo continues I would look at a change in food .
If you go to an independant pet shop rather than a pets at home type store ( apologies to you all :D )
then they can usually advise you better
this is only my opinion you do what you feel is best :)
I have a dobe ( and he has a delicate tum-it doesn't take much to throw him sideways )
I feed him Autarky complete which is a natural food with lots of herbs etc and he has been great on it
hth
letus know how he goes
liz :)

Hi Russ you can get Arden Grange delivered free to your door from www.ardengrange.com. or www.championpets.freeserve.co.uk. If you do a search on www.google.co.uk you will find all the suppliers. One may charge slightly less then the others. There are two grades of AG puppy complete, I have only used the more expensive one. Although its not cheap, its no more expensive then many and there is less poo and its nice and firm!! I know that complete foods are not designed to be mixed with meat, but i do give a little bit ( cereal spoonful) if they wont eat just the biscuit, which often happens. Arden Grange is one of the few companies that use only fresh chicken flesh ( not beaks and claws etc) and all the ingredients are traceable, so you can be confident it comes from the highest quality sources. Lots of puppy feeds have the correct protein/fat etc but their source is not so good.
