Topic Dog Boards / General / Feeding mat

I feed raw, and need to find a suitable mat to feed edible and recreational bones on.

I have wooden floors and currently put down towels when feeding bones. However the towels move around and bunch up so I keep having to spread them out again. My boy doesn't lie down when eating bones - he stands and moves around so it can get messy. I also don't like having to wash the meaty towels in the washing machine.

So....I need a large mat. It should be able to stick to the floor like a doormat, but have a wipeable/washable surface so that I can disinfect it after use. Also, not too thin so the bones won't scratch the wooden floor.

Can't find anything suitable through a google search.

Does anyone know where I can get such a thing?

Why don't you just feed them in the garden? That's what I do.

Well.....there is a lane running behind my garden which is full of all sorts of detritus that attracts flies. So when he has a bone outside lots of flies appear.

Plus......if he's in the garden it's more difficult to keep checking up on how he's doing with a knuckle bone. I like to keep an eye on him.

Plus, I don't want the meaty residue on my artificial grass.

What about a cheap shower curtain or part of one, I use them lots to protect things usually during whelping and puppy rearing, can be wiped down and thrown out when it has gone past it's sell by date.

Felt backed heavy vinyl table cloths.

Usually on a roll sold by the meter, with various patterns/colours.

I have always used them under the whelping box to cover the laminate floor in the livingroom.

The blue plastic sheets you can buy to use for almost anything, tarpaulin like but cheaper -markets often sell them.

What about a turtle mat or similar.  You would probably need a couple - but they stay put, and the bones stay put on the mat.  Then you can just toss the mat in the washing machine.  Maybe Ikea does a super cheap version?

I feed raw too and in summer they often eat outside on the deck, or terrace or lawn.  But in winter their preference is to eat on the Turtle mat . . .

Edit:  sorry, just read the bit about not wanting to wash.  What about that waterproof table cloth stuff?  You can buy it in John Lewis - but I would also think you can get it from a market by the metre.  I used to clean my tack on a piece and it lived for many years.  Alternatively a large piece of spongy lino would work well and not ruck up.

Two eat bones outside, rain or snow, but one of mine always eats in his crate on his Tuffie which is a doddle to wipe afterward.  The puppy used to eat inside a moveable puppy pen (Croft) which was brilliant to ensure he stayed where he was put and to stop the other dogs from pinching his bones.  It was usually on grass but I did once use a piece of heavy lino offcut which was perfectly easy to wipe and didn't 'walk' across the floor.

Incidentally only one of my three dogs will lie down to eat a bone, and then it's only some bones - I suspect standing is more usual :)

Look at my Avatar, mine do both.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone.

I have some turtle mats and he'd quite happily eat on those, but I'd just much rather it was a wipeable surface. Plus I wouldn't be wanting to wash the mats in the machine several times a week. Turtle mats really stay put though, so it's a pity they don't do a vinyl version - I might email them to suggest this as a gap in the market as it seems like it's difficult for people to find good quality 'splash mats' for under high chairs too.

I also have some Tuffie beds, but he doesn't like to eat on those.

I didn't think an offcut of Lino would work, as assumed it would roll up rather than stay flat, but will give it a go as some of you have used it. Failing that the rubber mats or tarpaulin will be an option.

I think the lying down/standing up thing just depends on the dog. My last dog always lay down when eating bones so the towels stayed in place. She lay down as a default in lots of situations though. My boy only really lies down to go to sleep. Or when he's refusing to leave the park :-)

I think the table cloth would be easier to fold/roll than the vinyl :)

Me too - if the rain is heavy they get the bones the next day.
