Topic Dog Boards / Health / Lump on lower leg

My 2 yo Vizsla has a lump the size of a pea on her lower leg, I can get my fingers behind but when I washed it yesterday it is v red and angry looking? If it was a prickle I would expect puss? It dosen't seem to bother / hurt her.

Any ideas?
Thanks

On looking around the forum I believe it could be a Hystiocytoma.

What do people recommend for this? Is a trip to the vet required?

I am in the UK despite what my profile says! I think our server is in Germany?!

Our first Frenchie had a histocytoma on one of her back legs which she had removed (the histocytoma, not the leg!!) It didn't bother her but as she was shown it bothered me.

If it is a hystio then it's the vet, I think the big problem with them is they can bleed like billyo if they get caught on anything.

My boy had one of those and I had the vet just take it off, there were no problems with it. :-)

Sometimes these are simply blind spots, they start with a bite or prickle (particularly if your dog likes to poke about in the hedgerows) and they fill with pus but, if it's not too much or doesn't have an easy exit, it simply hardens then dissipates naturally.  There may well be a technical term for that but I've certainly known small soft lumps like this appear and disappear without much explanation!  I don't think breed is particularly relevant in this case but two of mine are wire haired vizslas.  One of which currently has a small lump near his ear that I'm watching...

However, that said, if you really aren't sure, you're very worried or it's getting bigger with no signs of a head etc then a vet visit might be wise - if only to reassure you.  Oh and beware the Google effect, I've scared myself more times than I can count when searching for medical information!!

In the meantime keep the area clean just in case it bursts, and you could try applying a little aloe vera gel

I know I googled last night and before long I was convinced she had something terrible...

Appointment made for this evening - as you said just to keep my mind at ease as I am sure it will disappear in a few days, if she was a hairy dog I expect it would have passed by completely un-noticed!

And yes - she loves to seek birds out from the hedges especially since the estate near me has released their pheasants!

I know exactly what you mean - last year my older boy managed to get an infected lump down near his bits. I was 99% sure it was just an infection needing antibiotics, and that was indeed the case, but sitting in the vets waiting room I couldn't stop my mind running scenarios of some terrible cancer meaning he'd have to be pts immediately - daft eh! I'm sure your girl's lump is nothing to worry about either. :-)

Yes as I thought the vet said it is probably a Hystiocytoma. Got some cream to try before they start doing skin tests etc.... the fact that the dog is not bothered by it is a good sign apparently.

Oh and I have no idea why I have 2 log in names!! Confused lol!

My young dog had a large histiocytoma (legs are most common place I think) and he had Vet gave him cream. I thought thats never going to get rid of it as it was angry but two weeks later it went. Hair grew back perfectly too so hopefully you will avoid surgery. They itch too which doesnt help :)

So one week of steroid cream has been completed and I have to say nothing has happened. I think I am going to keep a close eye on it as I don't want to put her through an op if it is going to disappear of its own accord. She is still not bothered by it.

Our Vet gave my dog Fuciderm Gel, he had it put on twice a day for 2 weeks.  I then stopped it and it took about another 2 weeks to disappear.  At it worst it was the size of a 5p piece.  They need to dry up and it can take a while as long as they leave it alone.

I am now in 2 minds whether to return to the vet or just leave for a bit longer. It looked red and horrible yesterday and is weeping a bit. I really don't want to cause the dog hassle if it is going to disappear on its own??

It has got bigger but also flatter - it started of a pea sized fairly round lump and now I guess it is smaller than a 5p but flat on top?

Ahh advice please!!
