hi
I have just brought my bitch back home after 21 days in season but when i did charlie my dog who i eventually want to mate with her was screaming and wanting to get her. Has anyone else got a dog and a bitch in the same house who mate together? Will he scream for the whole of the 3 weeks when i want to mate them or does it wear off? Any advice would be great
Thanks
Jill

Hi Jill your post made me laugh, Because bud mates with cleo. and when we wont let him get cleo all hell breaks loose. Bud has put his head through the shead door and window and he will constantly cry and cry. even last time when they did mate, he still went crazy as we seperated them.
Have fun and please warn the neighbours. :) :)

Thanks debbie
I was hoping you was not going to say that, so does that last the whole of the time she is in season.

LOL Jill, for the 1st ish week you will be ok but when the bitch is ready that is when the dogs knows and that is when he will try anything to get her, You can get a spray to stop the sent of the bitch, but i dont know if this works or not. I once sent bud away for a week whilst cleo was at her peak.
So it will probably last about 7 days of him crying when the bitch no longer will let him any where near her, he will loose interest and he wont cry any more.
What you may want to do is put the dog indoors and the bitch in a kennel, that way the dog wont keep the neighbours up at night. Mine laugh at me when cleo is in season as bud goes crazy and wont shut up.
Even if you had the male done, it makes no difference exept that there is no pups at the end. he will still want her and they will still tie.
So have fun Jill and i know what you will be going through :) :) :) :)

Hi Debbie,
Why does it make no difference? I always thought that when a male was castrated he lost the urge, and would just more or less ignore a bitch in season. Is that not right then? They actually still try and mate?
Hilda

I know of several castrated dogs who successfully mount and tie with bitches - fortunately it cannot lead to pregnancy! So, yes the urge is likely to remain, particularly if the dog has mated before he was castrated. Hormones may go, but memories linger! :)

My boy has to go on his hols when my girls are in season and then it takes him about three days when he comes home for it to dawn on him that he is toooooo late.
He isn't so bad now he is nearly 12 years (sorry it has gone on all these years) the last time I don't think he had the energy and he was able to stay here. But he used to bark like mad.
But my friends boy doesn't give a damn.

I guess I must be lucky because I have 2 males in the house and they will sleep in the same room as my bitches when they are in season and don't even try it. This is of course supervised and at night they are separated.
Both the boys know when a visiting in season bitch arrives though and there's lots of excitement, but no howling etc.
