Hi, has anyone had a diagnosis of  neuronal ceriod-lipofuscinosis  in the Rottweiler  as I recently had to have my 5 old male rottweiler put to sleep, autopsy results diagnosed this no cure fatal genetic disease, I am aware that it is common in other breeds of dog, but I am unable to find any reference to it in rottweilers, it is very hard to diagnose this disease as symptoms vary from breed to breed,  onset can start in young dogs, and in older dogs 5-6yrs (late onset) my dog had late onset NCL and more often than not misdiagnosed.  Chart below will give you a idea of how widespread this disease can be in rottweilers,

So according to the above chart my dog would have been bred by at the very least 2 carriers, was my dog the 1st officially diagnosed rottweiler to have NCL?  has anyone else had a rottweiler with NCL? I have found it very difficult to find any information regarding NCL in rottweilers. Have contacted the kennel club, just waiting to hear back from them.

Firstly, I am sorry for your loss.

Have you contacted your dog's breeder, and / or the breed clubs?

Your breeder needs to know that your dog has been affected by this disease.

If the breed clubs haven't looked into this then worth contacting whoever has the DNA test rights for the test for this disease (in other breeds).

They should be able to tell you if it is specific to one breed only or for several/all breeds.  The people who studied to find the gene will be the best place to go to, and Optigen/AHT or whoever do the testing should be able to give contact details.

After that really ti is the breed clubs before the KC, as any move for testing etc the KC will expect to come via breed clubs.

Unfortunately Alan Wilton who developed the DNA test  for Border Collies passed away late last year and the University of New South Wales no longer carries on his previous work. Optigen do carry out this test but they state that it is specific to Border Collies.

Then I suspect the Rottie breed clubs will have to investigate the incidence and see if anyone is researching the issue in the breed worldwide.

Breeder had been informed as soon as i recieved the diagnosis, i have had a response back from the kennel club which states that The KC does not currently record DNA test results for NCL in
Rottweilers. However, they advised me to contact the Rottweiler Breed
Club to discuss this matter further. As they regard them as experts in the
breed and they will be able to inform me of any findings of the
condition.

If they feel this test should be recorded for their breed they require a
formal request from the Breed Council, the Breed Health Representative
or all listed Rottweiler Clubs.
