Hi i have recently bought a mini smooth dachshund and i am hoping to show but wondered which lead do i need to show? has there got to be a certain type of lead?

I have mostly seen them on a fine slip lead or all in one lead and leather/chain half check with a piece in the neck end wider to avoid damaging fines skin, seen the same used in Italian greyhounds, and sometimes whippets.

Thanks for the reply i have a very thin red slip lead which has a kind of small metal bit which you draw up and lock in place with a cap so prob the same thing thanks

I have mini longs and use a chain and lead all in one, I like that it falls loose when I relax the lead, I also have all in one martingale ones but haven't used them as much.

Likewise when I showed the dax, had loads of the mega cheap nylon martingale style ones in bags and pockets, great for training young pups and those that tend to slip out from backing off if spooked.

OP from the description I would say this is the type you have. Avoid bright colours, all the bright reds are a little much even on a red dog.  I always opted for black on both the B/T and the shaded reds but anything matching but neutral works.

One bitch did show better on a super fine full choke and skinny leather lead as she would shake her head too much if the lead was near her ears all the time.

Leads are thankfully one of the cheaper items in dogs so try both and see which you prefer.  Easier to find the super fine choke collars at shows but for the nylon leads then good old eBay.

Thanks for the replies i have looked at the martingale ones but now another dilema which size to choose there are so many i found them on hub international but so many there. she is a black and tan so will prob just go for a black one but really unsure of size

I used the 3mm Ancol brand ones mainly. So anything 3 or 4mm is fine, wouldn't personally go any thicker.

If you get an option on length then grab a bit of string and have a measure, I'm short so went for a shortish length but depends on your height and how high you hold your hand.  You can always bunch them up as they are nice a thin.

eBay ancol lead

I was looking at the sizes of the Ancol ones on Ebay, I think there must be an error as it has xs/small breeds as having collar size of 60cms[24 ins]doesn't fit the size of the dog at all, my adult mini bitch dachsie is 8inches just below her ears and the lads are 10/12 inches.

Have you considered looking into the Resco leads? They're made in the US, but have seen them being sold over here. The material is quite soft and isn't harsh on the neck or the coat. You can get them in different styles, though the most common are the loop with a slider and half-check. The half-check can also come with a padded piece for the neck. Have converted several people in ringcraft to using them already, as they really are fantastic for certain breeds.

That's the max collar size, a dog needing a 60cm collar would easily snap it but they adjust right down to 1cm because they go big and small it makes them really quick to adjust and get over dachshund ears.
