Had to go to PAH today and waited for ages in the queue, I couldn't quite hear what the assistant was saying but all the customers that were served were saying yes and walking away with no change ( if they paid cash) When I got there and she totalled my bill she said "round it up to a pound for the RSPCA" to which I replied "definitely not". The man behind me said "so you support cruelty then?" I was aware of a fair amount of tutting from the queue, to which I replied " For your information I will not support an organisation that spend vast amounts on fancy head offices and do not carry out the wishes of deceased donors" I turned on my heel and left but I could feel the dirty looks all the way to the car.
I then donated to a local charity collectior who was rattling a tin in Sainsburys for our wildlife hospital.
Bloomin RSPCA get everywhere except where they're meant to get!!

Well done you . Its awful how little JP know about the RSPCA:-(
I went to PAH today and glad to say i paid with card although i didn't hear any staff asking for donations. I guess it was a regional thing.
Well done you for standing up for your beliefs. Nothing worse than to be made to feel guilty because you haven't donated.
A few years ago in my town centre raffle tickets were being sold in aid of disabled children. The prizes were cars, holidays etc. The tickets were printed on glossy paper etc and looked the biz and despite the hard sell i said no. Not because i'm mean but because i'm careful with what i do with my cash and who i give it to. It turned out to be a bit of scam where the sellers were pocketing the majority of the sales - Just like the RSPCA!!!
The rspca have stopped them selling on classifieds board, only free to good homers. 3 litters of kittens ftgh how responsible eh?

Well done you! I would have said 'I own the mutant freak pedigree dogs that the RSPCA is trying to get rid of, so I won't support them'! That's what I say when they come door to door calling - politely of course, it's not the door to door people's fault directly! Can't believe the man behind you was so rude and nosy!

LOL same here LucyDogs, poor guy was really shocked about what they'd had to say and he asked to see one of my mutant freaks and fell in love with her :)

Interestingly, our local PAH have been asking customers to round up to a pound everytime i've visited over the past 1.5 yrs. The 1st time they asked me i asked them who the donation is for & the cashier pointed to a box showing a local animal charity. If it had of been the RSPCA they no i wouldn't donate to them either.
I think on my next visit i will ask again just in case they have changed the benefactor's.
Personally, i'm not a scrooge & donate regularly to animal charities but find this PAH 'round up to a pound' really annoying.
I'm no scrooge either, I support Dogs Trust, our Local wildlife hospital but it was the fact that the beneficiary was the RSPCA that riled me. They are a national organisation who have teamed up with a huge chain, think how much good it could do a local charity rather than those money grabbers.
I too politely told a doorstep cold caller that I couldn't support the RSPCA and why, they had absolutely no idea what I was talking about and told me they are paid a fee every time they got a signature so they had no interest in what they were promoting!

I wouldn't donate to Dogs Trust either and have them told so -only one word needed and that word is CRUFTS.
I volunteer for a local branch of a national charity (not one of the super rich one's though), but I have to say it's at local level where the hard work and dedication of volunteers really takes place and the money makes most difference. Your extra coppers make more of an impact locally.
Many (although, not all) large national charities carry the guilt of frivolous spending and over-staffing, while local branches and independent charities are starved of funds and struggle to survive.
I don't mind putting money in buckets if it's going to a local branch or an independent charity, but I flatly refuse to engage with 'chuggers' who are being paid to sign us up to regular standing orders.

Ditto and therefore I would rather give donations of food to the local RSPCA, than money straight to headquarters.
