Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Dry complete food and raw mince
- By Dribble Date 06.09.12 19:03 UTC
My dogs do quite well on chappie dry, I know it's not an ideal quality food but financial situation means I have no choice. I've tried csj and the like and either one or the other isn't suited. Because chappie dry doesn't have a huge meat content I thought I'd add half a cup of raw mince from p@h but have just read that this isn't ideal as raw/dry digest at different rates - I only did it tonight but won't be trying this again!

As they both really enjoy raw meat I was wondering if it would be best to give a small meal in the morning of raw mince and their usual dry chappie at night, would this get rid of the digestion rate problems? I may at some point contemplate completely raw but for now I have a couple of 15kg sacks I need to get through.

So my question in a nutshell is will half a cup of raw tripe/chicken mince be okay in the morning with chappie dry given separately at night?

Also, a friend of mine feeds her dog on just raw mince mixed with uncooked pasta, I've not heard of uncooked pasta bring used before. I was wondering the benefits of any and of course any negatives. Her dog looks to be in excellent condition.

My dogs are fed with dry food mixed 50/50 with minced meat and they doing rather fine.

Is that raw mince? From what I've read this evening (allbeit from only a few sources) the dry complete takes longer to digest meaning the raw will sit festering in the stomach. It's suggesting that as raw food is processed much quicker it's not ideal to mix both at feeding times :/

Maybe I'm just over worrying and over complicating things.

I too feed 50/50 raw mince and fish 4 dogs in the same meal and my lot have no problems. I can imagine that for very sensitive tums it may cause problems but mine don't have cast iron constitutions and are still ok. Ive heard humans are not supposed to eat fruit after other food for the same reason but I always eat my fruit after my lunch sandwich/salad.

Yes, it is raw. Mostly chicken but also lamb, tripe etc.
I wouldn't pay that much attention to all that scientific mambo jumbo, just watch your dogs and use common sense.
Btw I love cold milk when I had a few too many sometimes and very often after lamb kebab lol. My grandma would be terrified haha

Lol thought it was just me who loved a pint of cold milk after a skin full on a night out-I'm such a classy girl!

I 'learnt' this too when I first started feeding raw but it's a view that has no scientific merit - there is no reason whatsoever that you can't combine raw mince and kibble in the same bowl.  I feed mostly raw but do add a few grams of kibble to mince meals in order to help one of my dogs to maintain his weight :)

I'm with Dab on this one. You only have to feed raw for a while and you realise dogs naturally digest things at different rates. One poo might be almost all bone (white) the next may be darker and softer (meat) and then if you give a raw carrot as a teeth-cleaner/dessert, that comes out separately too - the chunks of orange are a bit of a giveaway there!

Not sure how to reply to all so replying to the last post :)

Thanks for your input! Seems I was over worrying after all. I'll try it for a few days and see how we go. That's also handy to know with the raw feeding and different types of poo regarding what food, I never knew that.

They've had it again this morning, although my rottie is now eating lots of grass, so will have to keep an eye on him as this generally isn't something he does. Raw tripe is a new one for him though, he's used to raw beef/chicken.

And the same here. My dogs are on CSJ dry food with various minced meats added each meal (half/half). They have never had a problem at all.

Nice to read thoughts from the experienced RAW feeders, very much appreciated and also informative. Thank you :-)

We are raw fed here but sometimes the girls get all sorts of bits and pieces thrown in ! depends on what mood I am in LOL. It's not unknown for them to have 1/2 bag tripe with a slice of toast or a few baked beans or a hanfull of whatever bag of kibble has been won ! They eat pasta, rice, potatoes, veg, kibble, bones, minced meat, the fat of the steak cooked or uncooked, tinned tomatoes, pilchards, eggs yoghurt......you name it ... they will eat it ! I even dropped a bag of frozed uncooked tagliatelli this morning and they soon tidied up the bits of the floor! Dustbins!!!!

Is minced just plain old raw food?
- By LurcherGirl [gb] Date 07.09.12 11:17 UTC
Yes, though some come with offal and bone minced in as well.
- By Merlot [gb] Date 07.09.12 11:26 UTC
Yes but I get a complete mince with chicken tripe veg and fruit, a lamb mix with the extras  and an oily fish one too.

I'm another who feeds complete and raw and usually in the same meal, never had a problem.

Yep, we too feed kibble and raw mince, or kibble with cooked chicken ......... etc.  Never had any problems.  I feel the overall quality of what we are feeding our dogs is the main factor.  A bit like the way I feed my family - wholesome fresh stuff the majority of the time - allows the occasional lapse into convenience food :-)

if you are worried just lightly boil the meat...i feed this way and never had a problem, i started to feed like this as one of mine got ill feeding raw, must have been unlucky and picked up a bug.

I guess one of things I have leanred with raw is that there are many opinons. I tend to be fairly purest about the way I feed raw but believe if you do your research you then make your own descion as to the way you believe is best and most suitable for you and your dogs. Much like we do when feeding our human families.

I always wondered about mixing raw with kibble and was told no- then was told wait 24hrs another said at least 5-6 hours.
But I offer my dogs a boney (dog biscuit) after a meal which would be kinda like a kibble and never thought twice.
